how to get the code coverage file name and path

as per the doc it says,

To collect code coverage on any platform that is supported by .NET Core, install Coverlet and use the --collect:"XPlat Code Coverage" option.

but in the doc it never mentioned where the code coverage report will be generated and what would be the filename ?

OK so coverlet has 3 drivers coverlet.console, coverlet.msbuild and coverlet.collector. From your comment I assume you want to use coverlet.collector. Due to the vstest platform it is using you can't really specify the output directory, you only get files in guid named directories. This is described in detail here https://github.com/coverlet-coverage/coverlet/blob/master/Documentation/VSTestIntegration.md#coverlet-integration-with-vstest-aka-visual-studio-test-platform.
E.g. the report directory could be located at

C:\git\coverlet\Documentation\Examples\VSTest\HelloWorld\XUnitTestProject1\TestResults\bc5e983b-d7a8-4f17-8c0a-8a8831a4a891\coverage.cobertura.xml

AFAIK you also can't change the filename. The filename depends on the format you choose which is also described in the link.

If you want to have full control of the output directory and report filename you can use one of the other drivers that doesn't have this limitations.

in our project we use this command :

dotnet test --logger:trx --collect:"XPlat Code Coverage" --results-directory TestResults ./abc.csproj --no-build

so does it mean that coverage.cobertura file will be placed in "TestResults" directory ?

further, what is the format of this coverage.cobertura file ? is it XML ?

any way to convert this coverage.cobertura file in [OpenCover ](https://github.com/OpenCover/opencover)format ?

It may honour the --results-directory, but I'm not sure. Try it and see where the file ends up, the path to it will be output in the terminal.

You can change the file format to OpenCover by providing a runsettings file to the test command:

if I understand correctly , the below command will give me code coverage in runsettings.xml file ?

if yes, then how come I will merge all runsettings.xml files and have final coverage file ? . because , i have multiple csproj files and if i pass --settings flag for each command, then it will generate many XML files so how should i merge that .

what should be the better way ?

No, the runsettings file contains parameters to coverlet, which lets you control the output format if you want opencover instead of cobertura.

In any case, you will get one coverage file per test project. Try running the command and note the file names it will output in the console.

To merge them into a single file or report, you can use https://github.com/danielpalme/ReportGenerator (though it currently only supports merging into cobertura or Sonarqube formats, not opencover, according to the README file there). Think about what you want to use the files for - if it is getting reports from ReportGenerator then you can just run it on most any coverage files, if it is sending files on to some other reporting system look at the docs for that system to see which formats they support and if they can merge multiple coverage files into a single report.

Thanks. I ran the following command and it generated covergae.cobertura.xml file.

$ dotnet test --collect:"XPlat Code Coverage" --results-directory TestResults ./abc.csproj --no-build

so it means that , it generated the output file in cobertura format. but i need file to be generated in openCover format because SonarQube understands the Opencover file format using the property : sonar.cs.opencover.reportsPaths

so my further question is , does ReportGenerator tool will convert this cobertura file to openCover supported file ?
if yes , any example please ?

@irfanjs you can generate OpenCover directly using a parameter https://github.com/coverlet-coverage/coverlet/blob/master/Documentation/VSTestIntegration.md#advanced-options-supported-via-runsettings with runsettings or inline

@irfanjs ReportGenerator can merge multiple files (in either cobertura or opencover format) to the Sonarqube coverage format, which may be the best option for you.
