Work in progress
The reason why management has such a bad name, is because when it's done well, it's invisible, but when it's done badly it's obvious. A manager's job is to use their skill and experience to foster a system that achieves the desired vision.
This is the most important skill. By anticipating problems, you can take action before they impact the team. Ask
- What can go wrong?
- What symptoms will there be?
- How can I mitigate the risks?
- What will I do if they happen anyway?
If team members are operating autonomously, but within their level of capability, you are anticipating problems and communicating in a clear and timely manner you should not have to make many decisions. However when you do need to make a decision...
- You usually only need most of the facts to make a good decision
- Most decisions are not completely right and completely wrong
- Decisions can usually be reversed
- It is usually better to be quick and slightly wrong, than late and exactly right
- Provided you make more good decisions than bad ones, you're doing OK
