The ESP board handles Zigbee radio and coordinator work. The Linux SBC hosts the database, API proxy and browser application. The Pi can also be the ESP-IDF development workstation; firmware flashing uses the board's USB connections.

Dashboard

The React, Mantine and GridStack dashboard provides:

  • Location tabs with numeric readings and historical charts.
  • An All overview of sensor readings, designed as a compact, read-only page suitable for tablets.
  • Configuration and Setup for pairing, device inventory, location assignment, supported reporting configuration and device controls.
  • A System page with Raspberry Pi and SQLite health information, plus an operator-confirmed history purge workflow.
  • A Starlink tab beside System for read-only local router diagnostics and separate dish satellite-link telemetry.
  • Presentation profiles with per-profile dashboard preferences. Profiles are not logins: they do not authenticate users or restrict device access.

Charts use measurements stored by the SBC with receipt timestamps. Missing data remains a gap; the dashboard does not fabricate samples to make a line look continuous. Gateway availability and the age of the last measurement are shown as different conditions.

The Starlink tab polls the router and dish independently through their local gRPC endpoints. It can show router clients and network details, plus dish throughput, latency, packet loss, link state and obstruction when returned by the terminal. Dish fields are optional and firmware-dependent; a successful connection does not mean every metric is populated. The Pi stores local samples for charts. See the repository's Starlink monitoring guide for defaults, setup and known limits.

Zigbee and device functions

The firmware supports coordinator formation/restoration, device pairing, endpoint/cluster discovery, standard attribute reads and reports, and explicit On/Off commands. The SBC stores device state and history and provides selected commissioning workflows for supported devices.

See Device compatibility and limitations for the model-specific scope. In brief, the current adapters cover SONOFF SNZB-02WD, SNZB-02LD and SNZB-02UL temperature sensors and the S60ZBTPG smart plug. Support is intentionally model-specific where vendor behavior is required.

Wi-Fi and gateway recovery

The S3 joins an existing 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. The SBC service monitors the gateway and includes recovery/rediscovery behavior for supported outages. Stable DHCP reservations, reliable power and a good radio location still matter. A recovery feature is not a guarantee against every router, power or RF failure; follow the outage procedures in Operating the system.

Scope and maturity

The source, API contracts and setup documentation are in the GitHub repository. The project has recorded real hardware validation for selected devices and dashboard behavior. Simulator tests demonstrate software paths, not real radio compatibility. A 50-device load test has not been completed.
