DataCite Release Notes – December 2025

We're excited to share the latest feature enhancements, tweaks, and bug fixes across our services. Here's what's new:

Citations now include more of your DataCite DOI metadata

• Citations available in services like DataCite Commons and Content Negotiation now represent more of your DataCite metadata, like editors and available dates. We’ve also made it easier to create citations for resources in a series, like journal articles, by taking advantage of RelatedItem fields like “volume” and “edition.” You should see these changes immediately when viewing citations across DataCite services. Learn more about updating your DataCite metadata to enhance the way your DOIs appear in citations.

More flexible querying for affiliations, funders, and more

• Fields like affiliation name, funder name, and subject can now be queried in the REST API using case insensitive and otherwise more flexible searches. We hope this helps with querying use cases like institutional reporting, where querying multiple representations of an institution’s name is often a fallback for PIDs like RORs. Have you struggled with wildcards and OR statements in the past? Try out the querying changes and let us know what you think.

Tweaks and bug fixes

• We fixed an issue where Crossref DOIs weren’t being imported into DataCite Commons when either a DataCite DOI contained a relationship to a Crossref DOI or vice versa. Crossref DOIs that were not imported previously are now being processed. (Crossref DOIs are not being imported when a Crossref DOI is included in an Event datacite#2438)
• We added a message in Fabrica to help clarify where to add a repository, which we hope will be a helpful change for Consortia managing repositories. (Add information where to create new repositories in DataCite Fabrica #131 (comment))
• We tidied several labels and forms in Fabrica, including adding more detailed information about DOI states to the Fabrica Form and File Upload pages.
• We fixed a bug where charts for usage in DataCite Commons would report views and downloads occurring one month prior to their actual occurrence in certain time zones. (Usage chart reports views and downloads as occurring one month before the month indicated by work metadata akita#225)
