Can't seem to make Image::orientate work

Some of the images are shown sideways and I guess I need to apply Image::orientate to read the exif data of the image.

This is the relevant part of my blade template

And this is my smart.php configuration. I simply added the orientate template, which calls the orientate function.

The EXIF module for php is enabled on the host. What else could I try?
