MKDD-NX 1.7.0
MKDD-NX 1.7.0
Wi-Fi multiplayer (LAN mode)
- The game's LAN mode, between Switches on the same Wi-Fi network: no cables or adapters. Turn on Multiplayer > LAN play on each Switch, restart, then pick Wi-Fi mode on the title screen. See LAN Play.
- Standard game only (level pack OFF). Every console needs this version.
- The LAN play page shows this console's address, the link (consoles found, round trip, lost packets), and LAN peer for networks that block broadcasts. The FPS counter shows the link too.
- A pause screen in LAN races (Continue / Quit). The race carries on behind it, and Quit goes back to the title screen.
- During LAN play, cheats, laps, any kart and battle CPUs stay off on every console, so all of them play the same race.
Multiplayer
- Two players side by side: split screen left and right instead of top and bottom, with a HUD laid out for it (Multiplayer > Split screen; can be changed mid-race).
- Better frame rate in multiplayer races.
- Changing Camera view in the menu now changes every player's camera.
Mods
- RTGP Baby Mode 1.4 and RTGP Classic 1.4, the alternate versions of Retro Track Grand Prix on its GameBanana page (
Baby Mode 1_4.xdelta,Mario Kart Double Dash RTGP Classic OST 1_4.xdelta). They install on the Switch like 2.1, each has its own saves, and X / Y turn the cup pages. See Retro Track Grand Prix.
Custom characters
- 30 characters a page: a third row on the select screen when extra characters are installed.
- The slot overwrite limit is gone: a custom character and the character it plays as can race together, and so can two custom characters of the same one. Each has its own model, HUD face, map icon and voice.
- Random (L + R) can pick from every page.
- The page number and the X / Y buttons show in the title banner, and empty cells are skipped.
- A mod's own select screen poses are used.
MKDD-NX Tools
- New: Convert WiiMK Characters (beta) turns a Mario Kart Wii driver (
.szs) into a character, with a preview you can turn. Drivers only, not karts, and Mii outfits aren't supported. See Wii Characters. - Export MKDD Characters (formerly Characters) handles more of a mod: a face rendered from the model when it has none, its select screen poses, and its name tags in other languages. A one-character mod's special item and karts are kept for later.
- Battle Routes: Cancel on the start question goes back.
Fixes
- Exiting the app or Restart now is more reliable: the app frees its threads and network memory before handing back to the homebrew menu.

v1.6.2
MKDD-NX 1.6.2
Custom characters
- Character voices: a character mod's own voice clips and sounds now play in game, in place of those of the character it plays as. Mods in the MKDD Patcher layout (
audio_waves/<Archive>/<id>.wav) work, as do mods with rebuilt sound files. The Characters tool fits each sound to the one it replaces (mono, sample rate, length), as the MKDD Patcher and MKDD Plus do, so no Patcher is needed. - Up to 256 extra characters, with room for more files per character.
- Long sessions no longer run out of memory for characters: the select screen frees the previous race's characters when it opens.
- The Characters tool says when a mod comes with its own kart, which isn't used yet (the character drives the game's kart).
In-game updater
- Version 1.6.2 and later check for updates through GitHub's release info (the version, and the app file's size and checksum).
update.txtis still in each release, as a fallback and for 1.6.1 and earlier.
MKDD-NX Tools
- One app for all the companion tools, replacing the three separate ones: HD Textures, Characters and Battle Routes, each on its own tab. You can switch between tabs at any time and each keeps your work. See the wiki.

Battle CPUs
- A CPU stuck against a wall or an object backs out the way it came and rejoins its route.
- Shine Thief: CPUs without the Shine go after it much harder. They take the quickest way to it or its holder, cut across to it from further away, keep their shells for the holder, and boost toward a dropped Shine. A dropped Shine that lands off the route, or behind them, no longer gets ignored.
Other
- Debug Logging has a new mode, GAME + BATTLE AI, for the battle CPUs' decisions. The other modes no longer log them.
- README: the mod instructions and the Options menu moved to the wiki.
- Code cleanups.

v1.6.0
MKDD-NX 1.6.0
Single player battle mode
- Balloon Battle, Shine Thief and Bob-omb Blast against three computer karts (Mods > Single player battle mode, on by default). In 2 and 3 player battles, CPUs fill the empty places.
- Works on the game's six arenas and all 24 MKDD Plus arenas. Their routes are built into the app, so there's nothing to install. A
routes/<key>.txton the SD card replaces the built-in route for that arena. - The CPUs go for item boxes, chase and aim at the nearest karts, steal the Shine, and run when down to their last balloon.
- Route tools for the PC:
tools/battle_routes.pyandtools/route_editor.py(docs/BATTLE_ROUTES.md). The editor shows the game's and MKDD Plus's arena maps.
Camera
- Kart FPV: first person with the kart's front in view. Right stick click switches it on and off for each player.
- Driver FPV: one first-person view from the driver's eyes, replacing low, mid and high.
- Both follow the driver's head, so every kart and character sits right. A on the view opens its page: eye height, eye forward and tilt.
Controls
- Button mapping no longer locks up. Only A, B, R, X and Start need a button; the other actions can have none.
- New Kart FPV action. Shorter hints.
Other
- Cheats: Perfect starts, and Laps moved to this page.
- Bob-omb Blast's start banner fixed for one player.
- MKDD Plus battle stage pictures, and the one-player battle map placed under the Shine.
- Debug logs no longer fill up with HUD lines.
- README: battle mode, how to set up character packs (from GameBanana and the MKDD wiki), credits for Retro Track Grand Prix.

It starts from the built-in routes, and Save writesroutes/<key>.txtfor the SD card (wiki).update.txt: for the in-game updater.
v1.5.5
MKDD-NX 1.5.5
- Character packs: extra characters from the SD card's mods/characters folder, on more select screen pages (X / Y), each playing as its base character. Random picks across all pages.
- First person for each player (right stick click) in 1 to 4 player races; player 1's camera view no longer applies to the others.
- HUD assets hide in 2, 3 and 4 player races too.
- Cheats: Mini-turbo for CPUs.
v1.5.0
Camera (new menu, between Controls and Game)
- Camera view: the normal chase camera, or first person from the driver's seat at three eye heights (low, mid, high), in 1 and 2 player races. The right stick click switches between normal and first person high by default.
- Rear view: hold Y to look behind you, in first person too, and for every player in split screen.
- Camera height: low, medium, regular (the game's) or high. It never drops below the kart.
- Camera distance: very close, close, regular (the game's), far or very far.
- Field of view: moved here from Graphics, with two new settings: Widest and Wideee.
- Free camera: the right stick (or a GameCube C-stick) turns the camera a full 360° around your kart. When you let go it can snap back, glide back over about a third of a second, or stay where it is until you press Camera reset, which you can put on any button.
Race HUD
- Modern style: smaller pieces in the screen corners, for 1 to 4 players, giving split-screen races more room.
- HUD assets: hide each piece one by one, or all at once.
- Speedometer: MPH or KM/H.
Controls
- Button mapping: the camera actions (first person, jump, camera reset) can go on any button, as well as the GameCube buttons.
- Pause screen: new Rear view and Jump boxes show the buttons they're mapped to.
Game
- Jump: a hop on the Jump button (ZL by default) at low, mid or high height. The hop carries your speed and follows the slope.
- Laps: 1 to 7 laps, or the course's normal count, in Grand Prix and Versus. Time Trial and Battle are unchanged.
Cheats
- No weight classes: any driver pair can use any unlocked kart.
- Special items: any character can use any special item, or you can assign one to each character.
- Mini-turbo sweeps: fewer steering sweeps to charge a mini-turbo (1 or 2 instead of 3).
- Mini-turbo speed: up to +100% boost speed. This also raises the speed cap while boosting.
- Mini-turbo length: up to 4x boost duration.
Other
- Main menu: Update and Debug now sit on the Exit game row (press right to reach them).
- New app icon by realneonplayz (SteamGridDB).
- Start-up fix: a launch that occasionally hung on the loading screen now recovers.
The HD Textures app for Windows and Mac is unchanged: get it from the v1.4.1 release.
