Retro Track Grand Prix
MKDD-NX can play Mario Kart: Double Dash!! Retro Track Grand Prix 2.1 (RTGP) by Portable Productions (with additional credits to ShaneMGD, LMFinish, AdolescentSeagull, Tarsa, Yoshi2 and Cristian64), with its retro cups and courses. It comes as a patch of the game's disc; MKDD-NX installs it on the Switch, so you don't need a PC tool to patch your disc image, and the standard game stays playable. The mod isn't included with MKDD-NX.

Download
mario_kart_double_dash_rtgp_2_1.zipfrom the mod's GameBanana page and unzip it. The mod is too big for GameBanana: the zip only holdsOPEN ME.txtwith the link to the patch. Download the patch from that link:MKDD RTGP 2.1 Update.xdelta(about 2 GB). -
On the SD card, create
sdmc:/switch/MKDD-NX/mods/and copy the.xdeltafile into it as it is (any name ending in.xdeltaworks):sdmc:/switch/MKDD-NX/ MKDD-NX.nro Mario Kart - Double Dash!! (USA).iso (or .rvz) mods/ MKDD RTGP 2.1 Update.xdelta -
Start the game. It finds the patch and asks INSTALL RETRO TRACK GRAND PRIX 2.1?: choose INSTALL NOW. It takes a few minutes (B cancels) and writes the mod's files to
mods/rtgp/, about 2 GB more on the SD card. The patch is applied to your own disc image, which stays as it is; an.rvzworks as well as an.iso. -
When it's done, the game offers to delete the
.xdeltafile. It's no longer needed, and deleting it frees about 2 GB. Then the game starts in RTGP.
On the − menu's Mods page, set Level pack to RTGP, PLUS or OFF (the standard game), then choose Restart now.
RTGP keeps its own saves in save/rtgp/, apart from the standard game's and Plus's. The first time, the game offers to start from a copy of your standard save.
In a cup, X and Y switch between the mod's course sets.
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| The patch is reported on screen and left alone | Only 2.1, Baby Mode 1.4 and Classic 1.4 work. A patch for another version or another game isn't installed. |
| Not enough space | The install needs about 2 GB free besides the patch itself. |
The same mod comes in two alternate versions, both 1.4, on the Files list of the same GameBanana download page:
| Version | What it is | Download | Patch inside | Level pack | Saves |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RTGP Baby Mode 1.4 | easier, for newcomers | rtgp_baby_mode_1_4.zip |
Baby Mode 1_4.xdelta |
RTGPBABY | save/rtgpbaby/ |
| RTGP Classic 1.4 | with the classic soundtrack | mario_kart_double_dash_rtgp_classic_ost.zip |
Mario Kart Double Dash RTGP Classic OST 1_4.xdelta |
RTGPCLASSIC | save/rtgpclassic/ |
They install exactly as 2.1 does above:
- Each zip holds only a readme with a Google Drive link to its patch: download the
.xdeltafrom that link. - Copy the
.xdeltaintosdmc:/switch/MKDD-NX/mods/as it is. - Start the game and choose INSTALL NOW when it asks INSTALL RTGP BABY MODE 1.4? or INSTALL RTGP CLASSIC 1.4?. Each is written to its own folder (
mods/rtgpbaby/,mods/rtgpclassic/), about 2 GB each, then the game offers to delete the patch.
You can install 2.1, Baby Mode and Classic side by side and pick one with Level pack on the − menu's Mods page, then Restart now. Each keeps its own saves.
In a cup, X and Y switch between the course sets, as in 2.1.
LAN play doesn't work with any version of RTGP: its LAN entry runs code the mod loads from the disc, which MKDD-NX doesn't have. Set Level pack to OFF for LAN play.
