Press − at any time in the game for the options menu. Every option below is saved to config/settings.ini in the app folder.

Main page

The game pauses while the menu is open (and while the Switch is in the HOME menu or asleep). It also opens by itself when a controller in use disconnects; reconnect it and close the menu.

Game the page below
Graphics the page below
Camera the page below
Controls Button mapping (each Switch button's GameCube button or action: Driver FPV, Kart FPV, jump, camera reset; A, B, R, X and Start always keep a button, the rest may have none), Joy-Con sideways (the same for a single Joy-Con held sideways) and Sync controllers (the system screen for pairing, the player order and single Joy-Cons). See Controls
Multiplayer the page below
Mods Level pack: which installed mod to play, PLUS, RTGP, RTGPBABY or RTGPCLASSIC, or OFF for the standard game (NONE FOUND when no mod is installed; see Mods). HD textures (Off (default) / On when mods/hd/hd-textures.bin is in the app folder (see Mods), else NO PACK), Single player battle mode (On (default) / Off: computer karts fill battles up to 4 karts; with one player, Battle is on the mode page) and Restart now, which starts the game again to apply a Level pack change (unsaved race progress is lost)

Multiplayer

Option
Split screen two players: Top and bottom (default, the game's) or Side by side, the screens left and right with a HUD laid out for them. Can be changed during a race
LAN play ON / OFF (default): LAN play over Wi-Fi with other Switches, from the next start. A opens its page: LAN play, LAN peer (ANY, or the other console's address for networks that block broadcasts; this console's address is in the hint), Connection (consoles found, round trip, lost packets) and Restart now while a change waits for it. See [[LAN Play

In LAN play the menu doesn't pause the game, and from the first Wi-Fi mode screen the cheats, laps and any kart stay off until the app restarts.

Graphics

Option
Widescreen 16:9 (default): wider game camera, race HUD at the screen edges, menus 4:3 in the middle; or 4:3
4:3 edge border Off / On: checkered border art in the side bars during races in 4:3 (menus keep black bars)
Docked resolution on the TV (1080p output): Native (640x480), 1.5X, 2X (1280x960) or Auto (default: 2X, stepping down when the frame rate drops); handheld uses Handheld resolution
Handheld resolution on the Switch screen (1280x720): Native (the game's own 640x480), 1.25X, 1.5X (960x720, as many lines as the screen) or Auto (default: 1.5X, stepping down when the frame rate drops)
Texture filtering Normal / 2x / 4x / 8x / 16x anisotropic filtering: sharper roads and walls at a distance (most visible with HD textures, which have mipmaps)
Color Accurate / Vivid / Custom brightness, contrast, saturation (hold Y on that page to preview); saved to config/color.ini

Camera

Option
Camera view Normal (the game's chase camera), Driver FPV (first person from the driver's eyes) or Kart FPV (first person with the kart's front in view), in 1 to 4 player races. Both follow the driver's head, so every kart and character gets its own eye. With either chosen, A opens its page: eye height and eye forward (steps of 5, from the head), tilt (degrees down) and defaults, also in settings.ini (driver_eye_up, driver_eye_forward, driver_tilt, kart_eye_up, kart_eye_forward, kart_tilt). Player 1's setting: changing it changes every player's view; then each player's right stick click switches their own camera between Normal and Kart FPV (Driver FPV can get a button too, in Button mapping). Y looks behind you in any view
Camera height Low / Medium / Regular (default, the game's) / High: the chase camera's height; it never goes below the kart
Camera distance Very close / Close / Regular (default, the game's) / Far / Very far: how far the chase camera sits behind the kart
Field of view Normal / Wide / Wider / Widest / Wideee race camera, kept separately for 4:3 (default Normal) and 16:9 (default Wider); the row changes the current display mode's
Free camera the right stick (a GameCube pad's C-stick) turns the camera around the kart. When you let go: Snap back (default), Ease back (glides back in about a third of a second) or Stay (until Camera reset, a button you choose in Button mapping). Off turns it off. Not on a single sideways Joy-Con

Game

Option
Race HUD Classic (the game's) or Modern: smaller pieces in the screen corners, 1 to 4 players
Speed the speedometer in MPH or KM/H
HUD assets turn each part of the race HUD on or off (position, items, laps, map, speedometer, race order; left/right turns them all on or off), 1 to 4 players
Jump height Off / Low / Mid (default) / High: a hop on the Jump button (ZL by default) that keeps your speed and follows the slope
Rumble strength Off / Low (default) / High; the game's own Rumble option must be on too

Cheats

Option
Unlock all every character, kart, cup and mode while it is on; never written to your save, so your own progress stays as it is
No weight classes any unlocked kart for any pair of drivers, whatever their weight
Special items Normal, Any (any character can get any special item), or Custom (choose each character's)
Mini-turbo sweeps how many steering sweeps charge a mini-turbo: 3 (the game's), 2 or 1
Mini-turbo speed up to +100% boost speed (the speed cap rises with it while boosting)
Mini-turbo length up to 4x as long a boost
Mini-turbo for CPUs the computer's karts get the three mini-turbo settings above too (off: only the players')
Perfect starts every player gets the start boost at GO, without timing the button (holding it through the countdown no longer burns out)
Laps Normal (the course's) or 1 to 7 laps, for Grand Prix and Versus races from the next race; Time Trial and Battle keep theirs

Debug

Option
Show FPS Off / FPS / FPS + times: ms per game frame of the game thread (GAME), the graphics thread (GX) and the render thread (RENDER); 16.7 is the 60 fps budget
Logging debug logs on the SD card, for bug reports: GAME, GAME + AUDIO (sound problems), AUDIO, or GAME + BATTLE AI (also every decision of the battle CPUs)
Profiler Off / On: a sampling profile (logs/mkdd_prof.bin) for performance reports, from the next start
Clocks System (default): the game leaves CPU, GPU and memory clocks to the system or an overclock tool (Horizon-OC, sys-clk). Game: the game boosts the CPU while booting and raises handheld to CPU 1020, GPU 460, memory 1331 MHz (restored at exit). From the next start. With an overclock tool, keep System: the two would fight over the clocks (uneven frames, a crash when toggling the overclock while booting). For speed on stock clocks, set the resolutions to Auto
