A sturdier, faster archive, and a database of it for SQL and AI tools.

  • _archive.sqlite: every archived item in one read-only SQLite database in the archive folder, with full-text search (items_fts) and the run log, for sqlite3, Datasette, DuckDB or an AI tool. It's rewritten at most once a day by archive runs, and right away by lifelog rebuild.
  • Faster runs: the index cache is now a local SQLite database, and a run reads only the ledger lines added since the last one. Loading the index of a large archive went from over a minute to a few seconds.
  • Versioned ledger: ledger and run log lines carry a format version. If another Mac on a newer Lifelog writes lines this version doesn't understand, they're never treated as damage: that source pauses and pages aren't rewritten until you update, then everything catches up on the next run.
  • Facebook entries: posts, comments and other Facebook export items are stored as generic entries instead of chat messages. Existing items convert once on the next Facebook import, without being marked edited; their pages stay the same.
  • Claude Code cleanup: runs no longer report hundreds of duplicate-line warnings, and lifelog dedupe retires messages that were archived twice.

The first run after updating reads the whole ledger once to build the new cache.

Install

Download Lifelog-0.4.0.zip, unzip it and move Lifelog.app to /Applications, replacing the old version. The app is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens with a double-click. Permissions you granted to earlier versions carry over.

Requires macOS 14 or newer.

A nicer archive viewer.

  • Coverage heatmap: source names stay in view while you scroll the months sideways, and every month cell is the same width.
  • App icon: the viewer now uses Lifelog's icon as its favicon and in the header.
  • Refreshed look: the icon's teal as accent and heatmap colours, cards for the heatmap, tables and lists, a segmented navigation, pill-shaped badges and source tags, and a translucent sticky header, in light and dark. On phones, wide tables scroll inside their card instead of widening the page.

The viewer is rewritten on the next archive run, or right away with lifelog rebuild --output <archive>.

Lifelog now archives the rest of your Facebook activity, not only Messenger, from the same official Facebook export.

  • Facebook (facebook): posts and check-ins, photos and videos, stories and reels, places you were tagged at, comments and reactions, group posts, comments and memberships, event responses and invitations, Marketplace listings, conversations and searches, saved items, pages, pokes, friends and friend requests, follows and profile updates.
  • Each category gets one page per month under Facebook/, with one heading per entry. Photos, videos and links become placeholders; media are not copied.
  • Ads, security, login and device logs, settings and payments are left out.
  • Keep the Facebook export whole (format JSON) rather than customizing it down to Messages. A zip Messenger already imported is still imported for Facebook, as long as it is in the inbox.
  • Like Messenger, Facebook imports only add. The menu bar app imports them hourly and reminds you after 45 days without a new export.

A fix for newer ChatGPT exports.

  • Split ChatGPT exports are imported again: ChatGPT now ships conversations across numbered files (conversations-000.json, conversations-001.json, …) instead of one conversations.json. Lifelog used to skip such zips without a word; it now recognizes them, joins the parts in order and imports every conversation. Single-file exports keep working as before.

A fix that protects your archive.

  • No more emptied ledger files: a ledger or run-log file with no complete line (for example one Google Drive is still syncing, or a damaged one) used to be read as empty and then cut to zero bytes by the next run, losing its history. Lifelog now stops the run with an error naming the file and leaves the file untouched, so you can restore it or move it aside.

Lifelog now archives your Instagram direct messages and Facebook Messenger chats, imported from Meta's official exports.

  • Instagram (instagram): leave the JSON export zip from Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Export your information → Create export in ~/Downloads, and each chat gets its own page under Instagram/.
  • Messenger (messenger): the same, from the Facebook export. Chats with end-to-end encryption are not part of that export, so they are not imported yet.
  • Messages appear under the sender's name. Photos, videos, voice messages and shared posts become placeholders, and Meta's broken accents and emoji are repaired.
  • Exports often come in several zips, so these imports only add messages and never mark one as deleted.
  • The menu bar app imports both hourly and reminds you after 45 days without a new export.
