To take advantage of the reduced write amplification from apache/lucene#266, Elasticsearch should increase the default value of maxMergeAtOnce to a large-ish number such as 32 or 64. Lucene will do it in version 11 to avoid taking users by surprise, but it'd be nice for Elasticsearch to pick up this improvement before Elasticsearch 10, e.g. in version 9.0.
