There are no instructions I can find for beginners to get from mix phx.new to a working phoenix project.

There seems to be a circular dependency in the documentation.

I'm unclear why you should need to do any manual steps to get phx.new working. Why is that dependency not already set up?

could not compile dependency :exqlite, "mix compile" failed. Errors may have been logged above. You can recompile this dependency with "mix deps.compile exqlite", update it with "mix deps.update exqlite" or clean it with "mix deps.clean exqlite"

The ecto.create Mix task works just fine, I've been constantly using it myself. Could it be that your local dependency is outdated? Could you provide a list of versions for Elixir, phx_new, exqlite, and ecto_sqlite3 being used in your project?

You can get versions by running the following commands from your project directory:

elixir --version; mix archive; mix deps | grep exqlite; mix deps | grep ecto_sqlite3 

But I could already suggest you update these components upfront, recompile your project and try again. For now, it sounds like a problem with the versions of your dependencies.
