spreading loaded module setup in sub-shells

I have a number of module using set-alias, they work with the 3.2.10 C version. With both 1.775 and 1.832 the behaviour is a little odd. Everything works correctly if I run a "module load" from the command line, or add to my .cshrc and ssh to the server. All great so far.

We use xfce as our desktop envirnoment (this runs under NoMachine). If you create a new desktop session the modules are loaded (module list shows the correct thing), but set-alias statements do not work under 1.775 or 1.832. If I switch back to 3.2.10 the alias appear again. If I replace the "module load" with "module switch" set-alias also works under 1.775 and 1.832.

Thanks for reporting this issue. To be able to correctly handle it, could you please provide here the content of your .cshrc and the content of the modulefile that calls set-alias.

Also it would be very helpful if you can change the "module load " line in your .cshrc by "module --debug load " and then copy paste here the debugging output displayed in the situation were you encounter the issue.

My .cshrc calls a system wide cshrc:

I've also attempted to run the "module switch" command (which works) with
the debug statement (module --debug switch) but the aliases no longer
appear in my environment.

I am currently not able to reproduce. I see interesting things in the debug output you provided. First, when you connect via Xfce, the debug mention the "set-alias" commands. These commands are not applied as the whole module output is redirected in the debug file. Could you please let the debug mode activated but not redirect the output in a file. Then print list of alias set after the connection. I am curious to see in this situation if the aliases are set or not.

From the log provided when connection is made via SSH, we can see that an "admin" modulefile is loaded prior to the epicsdk, so it makes me believe that different initialization paths are taken between SSH connection and Xfce session. These initialization differences may give clues on why things are correctly set when going through SSH and why they are not there when going through Xfce.

I've created a clean environment and re-run the tests, the minimal number
of modules are loaded. You can see that the aliases do not get set with the
initial login, but do with the "ssh" connection.

This is the output from opening a new terminal after logging in to xfce
with the --debug flag in place. I guess it had detected that the epicsdk
module is already loaded and skipped it? Without a redirect to a file I
think the debug info generated by xfce is lost.

I must admit I don't know why this output is so much longer than the one
above (where I comment about the module load being skipped).

It is not just the epicsdk/default module that is not setting the aliases,
the nan/default module also has an alias for gedit, this also fails to
appear in the environment.

I have a number of module using set-alias, they work with the 3.2.10 C
version. With both 1.775 and 1.832 the behaviour is a little odd.
Everything works correctly if I run a "module load" from the command line,
or add to my .cshrc and ssh to the server. All great so far.

We use xfce as our desktop envirnoment (this runs under NoMachine). If you
create a new desktop session the modules are loaded (module list shows the
correct thing), but set-alias statements do not work under 1.775 or 1.832.
If I switch back to 3.2.10 the alias appear again. If I replace the "module
load" with "module switch" set-alias also works under 1.775 and 1.832.

I was finally able to reproduce and understood what happen : when starting a X session there is a top tcsh shell launched to boot the graphical environment. Once this graphical environment is started the tcsh shell you launched in graphical terminal are child of this top tcsh execution.

By putting the module commands in ~/.cshrc, these module commands are run already by the top tcsh shell at graphical boot time. So there the modulefiles are loaded and aliases are set (and this is what is saved in the debug file).

Then, when a graphical terminal is launched, it inherits the environment of the top tcsh shell, so when ~/.cshrc is parsed it sees that "nan/default" and "epicsdk/default" are already loaded in the environment, thus it does not load them again.

But if environment variables are propagated from a parent to a child process, this is not the case of shell aliases. So module finds "nan/default" and "epicsdk/default" loaded because they are described in the LOADEDMODULES environment variables, but the aliases both modulefiles set are not there anymore.

On Modules-Tcl, a reference count is maintained for each variable/path defined by modulefiles thus loaded modules are not loaded again if already loaded to avoid disturbing the reference counter. On C version, modulefiles are loaded even if already loaded, which explains why different behavior are encountered here.

What I propose as a workaround solution is to set a "module purge" command before your load commands in your cscrc-relative files. This way modulefiles will always be reloaded. It will let me some time to think on how to adapt "module load" behaviors to better cope with this situation.

when I open a terminal, I have a choice: a clean terminal (starts in $HOME, no specific environment). Or I launch a terminal from a project environment (starts in $PWD, all the tools are already setup with modulefiles). So the modulefiles are not re-loaded, they are just inherited. Not the aliases though.
Not sure if it is the same issue. Currently using modulecmd 4.1.4.

Same problem with a xfce session through x2go (remote graphic desktop) using module v4.2.1.
Through ssh connection, modules and aliases work well. Through xfce/x2go, aliases are lost.
Aliases are defined using "set-alias". Also tested using "set-function" : the functions are not transmitted also.
The proposed workaround using "purge" before loading the modules (in user's .bashrc or .modulerc) is not a solution. The remote desktop, just complains that it cannot unalias : the aliases are not present...

The initialization of Modules will be adapted to perform a module refresh when a loaded environment is found defined. This way when a sub-shell initializes Modules but inherits the loaded modules from its parent shell, the refresh will re-applies the shell aliases and functions defined in loaded modules that were not inherited from the parent shell.
