MacGamingFix 1.4.0

@evertjr evertjr released this 21 Jun 04:48

This is the first notarized release: MacGamingFix now opens without the "unidentified developer" Gatekeeper warning. Move it to /Applications and open it normally.

Fixes

  • AirPods / Bluetooth audio. The 44.1 kHz audio fix no longer cuts out Bluetooth output. It now adjusts only built-in and wired devices that actually support 44.1 kHz, leaves AirPods at their native rate, and re-applies automatically when you switch outputs.
  • Cursor stays hidden on Tab. Pressing Tab, M, or I (scoreboard, map, inventory) no longer reveals the mouse cursor mid-game. Only Escape triggers the menu-recovery reveal. (#2)
  • Game Mode setting is remembered. Turning Game Mode off now sticks across launches, for games that don't play well with it.

Universal build (Apple Silicon + Intel).

What's new

Active Game — manually pick the running app the fix should apply to. Useful when auto-detection picks the wrong window (Wine wrappers, Discord overlays, launchers). Searchable list with running apps and their icons.

Cursor Toggle Shortcut — global shortcut (default ⌃⌥⌘H) for showing or hiding the cursor on demand while Cursor Fix is active. Reassign from the app at any time.

Standard F-Keys — temporarily switches Apple keyboards from media controls to F1–F12 for gaming. Reverts on toggle off or quit.

Audio 44.1 kHz — temporarily forces the default output sample rate to 44,100 Hz to fix crackling or missing sound in some CrossOver/Wine games. Reverts on toggle off or quit.

Diagnostic logging — opt-in trace recording with one-click copy-to-clipboard for bug reports.

Reliability

  • Pressing Esc, Tab, M, or I after a forced suppression now reliably reveals the cursor — the release path now uses the same aggressive show loop the manual shortcut uses, so games that stack their own hides on the cursor are no longer able to keep it hidden.
  • Game-process detection migrated from the deprecated PSN chain to window-owner lookup.

🔒 Why does the app ask for Accessibility?

The Cursor Toggle Shortcut works in windowed games out of the box using a Carbon hot key (no permission required). True-fullscreen games capture the display directly and bypass the standard hot-key system, so for the shortcut to fire inside them MacGamingFix has to listen at a lower layer. macOS gates that low-level keyboard tap behind the Accessibility permission.

It's strictly opt-in. Decline and the rest of the app stays fully functional — only the fullscreen shortcut requires it. When you want it, enable it from the Cursor Toggle popover; the app will request permission and walk you to the right Settings panel.

Install

Download `MacGamingFix-1.3.0-macos.zip`, unzip, and drag the app to /Applications. Signed and notarized — no Gatekeeper steps required.

What's New

  • Standard F-Keys toggle — temporarily switches Apple keyboards so F1–F12 send standard function keys instead of media controls during gaming. Automatically reverts when toggled off or the app quits.
  • Notarized & signed — the app is now signed with Developer ID and notarized by Apple. No more Gatekeeper warnings on first launch.

Requirements

  • macOS 26 or later
  • Optional: Xcode Command Line Tools (for Game Mode)

Initial Release

MacGamingFix is a macOS utility that fixes the ghost cursor problem in CrossOver/Wine games.

Features

  • Cursor Fence — Detects and suppresses unwanted system cursor appearances during gameplay using zone-aware heuristics for menu bar, Dock, hot corners, and screen edges.
  • Multi-actuator cursor hiding — Uses multiple hiding strategies for games that resist standard SLDisplayHideCursor calls.
  • Game Mode — Optionally enables macOS Game Mode for reduced input latency and better CPU/GPU scheduling (requires Xcode Command Line Tools).
  • Automatic game detection — Tracks the frontmost app when the cursor is hidden and restores normal cursor behavior when you switch away.
  • Diagnostic logging — Built-in logging with UI toggle and copy-to-clipboard for troubleshooting.

Requirements

  • macOS 26 or later
  • CrossOver or Wine

Note

This app is unsigned because it relies on private macOS APIs that are incompatible with Hardened Runtime and App Sandbox. On first launch, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway to allow it.
