Bug: Crashes when deleting multiple files at once

Description

It seems I can delete individual files, but any number could cause a crash. It is not 100% of the time. My estimate is that it happens 80% of the time if deleting over 10 items, but it also seems that if I then reopen the app and try to delete as few as 2 files, it might crash again. No clear reasoning as far as file size, specific files, or otherwise. These are files on my SSD, not a cloud/network drive. Sometimes it ends up working fine after restarting the app; which could happen after doing once or crashing a dozen times, also without clear reasoning.

Steps To Reproduce

1. Select items
2. Select Delete -> Permanently delete
3. Crash

Thanks for the report, the log doesn't show any errors, can you type Event Viewer into the Windows start menu search > Click Windows logs > Click Application > Screenshot any errors that have Files.exe shown on the first line

I have the same issue, but it’s irrelevant whether it happens with multiple files at once or just one. There are no exceptions in the log.

In my case, I can consistently reproduce it under these conditions:

• A Downloads folder with hundreds of files.
• Preview panel open (checking details and content using the details/preview panel), reviewing text documents, PDFs, and PowerPoint files.
• The recycle bin icon at the top inconsistently stops highlighting when one or more files are selected (I mention this even if it's another bug, in case its state could be influencing this crash).
• Simply selecting one file, then another, and then making a selection completely freezes the application, causing it to close.

In my tests, the crash only seems to happen when the details/preview panel is enabled.

I have had it with only one file like last poster mentioned. I never have preview panel open in my case.

If it is still an issue in preview

• Are you using a grid layout when it crashed
• Can you also try reproduce the issue with a different PDF program set as default

I actually resolved this accidentally but I can't say how precisely. I had another issue with my computer and ended up deleting HKEY_CURRENT_USER. I haven't crashed since that when deleting files.

Now, deleting an entire section of the registry might not be a good idea but it's interesting that it was resolved from this...

I can tell you I never used Grid Layout when it crashed and I have the same default PDF program as before (they open in Edge).
