Add branch mocking feature

• Remove methods that seemed not to be used anywhere, and not to be public either.
• Add feature to mock subtrees, replacing them with a node that can be used for mocking. Useful for testing Tree layers. Also allows to set the root on construction, to be able to start testing on a given level.
• Tests. Incomplete, I think there were still missing tests for some important cases.
