Bass Clarinet Multiphonic Timbre Space Visualiser and Sampler

Required software to run code: Given updates to SuperCollider, older verions of FluCoMa don't run properly. Uses the corresponding versions mentioned below.

*SuperCollider 3.13 *FluidCorpusManipulation External build 1.0.8

*SuperCollider 3.14 *FluidCoorpussManipulation External build 1.0.9

Preliminary Steps

  1. Dowonload the files and folders contained keeping the directory structure
  2. Download the FLUCOMA external package from https://www.flucoma.org/download/ // Skip this step if you already downloaded it
  3. Add the external FluidCorpusManipulation to the extensions folder for Supercollider

Mac OS: "/Users/x/Library/Application Support/SuperCollider/Extensions/"

Folder contents:

Supercollider code file for MFCC analysis of bass clarinet multiphonics: bassClarinet_3D_MFCCs.scd Supercollider code file for descriptors (pitch, centroid, flatness): bassClarinet_2D_descriptors.scd

Wav file with multiphonic selections: collection_sound.mp3 Txt file with indices for analysis segmentation: collection_index.txt

INSTRUCTIONS

Once the preliminary steps have been completed, open one of the two files .scd files and follow the instructions within them.

This project was developed as part of Chiara’s doctoral project “Different Tubes” at the University of Antwerp, Royal Conservatoire Antwerp, and Orpheus Institute, and of Andrés’s postdoctoral fellowship at the Schulich School of Music of McGilll University, as part of the Analysis, Creation, and Teaching of Orchestration (ACTOR) Project. The sounds were recorded by Chiara Percivati in the bass clarinet and Andrés Gutiérrez Martínez as recording engineer in the half anechoic chanber of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT) in Montreal, in January 2025.
