Overview

We need to create a guide about effective user testing practices that UX/UI designers and researchers at Hack for LA can reference to carry out informative user testing

Action Items

  • Gather examples of how other projects or volunteers have done their user testing (message researchers, explore team GitHub's, and/or brainstorm with the community of practice)
    • Once done, remove the "Guide: Gather Examples" label and add the "Guide: Research" label
  • Research existing information about effective user testing practices in relevant resources including online articles, slack communities, etc.
    • Once done, remove the "Guide: Research" label and add the "Guide: Draft Guide" label
  • Create a draft guide, either in markdown format in this issue or a google doc in the [ux/ui google drive]
    • Once done, remove the "Guide: Draft Guide" label and add the "Guide: Review Guide" label
  • Review the guide with UX/UI community of practice
    • Once done, remove the "Guide: Review Guide" label and add the "Guide: Leadership Review" label
  • Present to the Hack for LA leadership team for sign off
    • Once approved, remove the "Guide: Leadership Review" label and add the "Guide: Place Guide" label

Hi @apurvabarve it looks like Danielle assigned you to this issue on April 5th. Are you still interested in working on this, or would you like to be unassigned? If you have created any documents or folders for this issue, please add those links to this issue.

I gathered available resources from all the projects list - couldn't find anything in Brigade Organizer's Playbook, Civic Tech Structure, Data Science Projects, GreenEarthOS, Guides, HomeUniteUs, People Depot, Tables Team, or VRMS. There are quite a few resources from each community of practice that require access to their respective Google drives. I have reached out to either the PM or UX Research/Design leads from 100 Automations, 311 Data, Access the Data, Open Community Survey, Expunge Assist, Food Oasis LA, and Lucky Parking. Hopefully I will be able to get in touch soon so I can include more information about best practices for their usability testing.

Thank you!

      • For usability, we do heuristic evaluations mostly right now and hope to be doing actual user-testing in the future. We don’t do A/B testing like the issue above (read the comments in the issue), but we occasionally do surveys on our and HfLA’s slack showing different options and asking for feedback
  • Conclusion: They aren't conducting any usability testing besides surveys, since they are such a small team.

Hi @pogwon !!

We are conducting the CoP audit #553 and implementing some new guidelines. Are you still working on this issue?

Update

Gathered resources from past issues and reaching out to other teams on Slack. I stopped here, because the guidelines said to stop at this point, since the team was in the process of updating instructions for further steps (though I am not sure if that is still the case). I can go ahead and unassign myself from this issue and move it into the Prioritized Backlog.
