Release list
Mothball 0.1.4
Highlights
- Send feedback from the app. Settings has two new buttons: Report a problem and Suggest a stack or cache. Each opens a short GitHub form with your Mothball version, system and chip already filled in. Nothing is sent until you submit it.
- Clearer bug reports and stack requests. New issue forms on GitHub ask for exactly what's needed to fix a problem or add a new stack, and explain how to get anything back from the Trash.
Install
macOS (Apple silicon and Intel, macOS 11 or later): download Mothball-0.1.4.dmg. If you have 0.1.1 or later, Mothball offers this update itself.

Mothball 0.1.3
Highlights
- Mothball for Linux. The desktop app now runs on Linux, natively on x64 and Arm64. Pick the AppImage (any distro, updates itself), the
.deb(Ubuntu, Debian) or the.rpm(Fedora). It adds Mothball to your app menu andmothballto your terminal, and runs in the background with systemd or your desktop's autostart. - Mothball now starts itself. The first time you open the app, it starts its background service on its own, on every system, instead of asking you to.
- Tested on real Linux machines. Every change is installed, opened and uninstalled on Ubuntu and Fedora, on x64 and Arm64, alongside the Windows and macOS checks.
Fixes
- Linux packages now bring the graphics libraries the app needs, so it opens on minimal installs too.
- After a package upgrade on Linux, the background service restarts itself on the new version.

Mothball 0.1.2
Highlights
- Mothball for Windows. The desktop app now runs on Windows 10 and 11, natively on both Intel and AMD PCs and Arm PCs (Snapdragon, Surface Pro). It installs for your account with no admin prompt, sits in the system tray, starts with Windows, adds the
mothballcommand to your PATH, and updates itself. - Tested on real Windows machines. Every change is now installed, opened, updated and uninstalled on Windows x64 and Arm64 before it ships, and run against fake projects on Windows, Linux and macOS.
Fixes
- Waking a Python, Gradle or Maven project now works on Windows.
- Counts read properly ("1 project", not "1 projects").
Install
macOS (Apple silicon and Intel, macOS 11 or later): download Mothball-0.1.2.dmg, open it and drag Mothball to Applications. If you have 0.1.1, Mothball offers this update itself.
brew tap herocodess/tap
brew trust herocodess/tap
brew install --cask mothball
Windows: download Mothball-0.1.2-windows-x64-setup.exe for Intel and AMD PCs, or Mothball-0.1.2-windows-arm64-setup.exe for Arm PCs (Settings > System > About > System type tells you which). The installer is not code signed yet, so SmartScreen may warn you: choose More info, then Run anyway.
Linux and the command line only: download the binary for your system below, or go install github.com/herocodess/mothball/cli/mothball@v0.1.2. The Linux desktop app is next.
Checksums for every file are in checksums-0.1.2.txt.
Mothball 0.1.1
Highlights
- Mothball now updates itself. Once a day it checks for a new version. When one is out, a banner shows what's new, downloads it in the background and asks you to restart. Every update is checked against its checksum, your Mac's Gatekeeper and Mothball's own signature before it's installed.
- What's new, inside the app. Release notes like these open right in Mothball.
- Appearance. Follow your system, or pick Light or Dark in Settings.
Also
- The menu bar shows when an update is ready.
mothball updatetells command line users how to update for the way they installed.- Update checks can be turned off in Settings. Nothing about you or your projects is sent.
Install
macOS app (Apple silicon and Intel, macOS 11 or later): download Mothball-0.1.1.dmg, open it and drag Mothball to Applications. It is signed and notarised. If you have 0.1.0, install this one over it; from here on Mothball updates itself.
Homebrew:
brew tap herocodess/tap
brew trust herocodess/tap
brew install --cask mothball
Command line only: download the binary for your system below, or go install github.com/herocodess/mothball/cli/mothball@v0.1.1.
Windows and Linux get the command line tool in this release; the desktop app for them is next. Checksums are in checksums-0.1.1.txt.
Mothball 0.1.0
Mothball puts idle projects away to get your disk back.
It finds build output you can regenerate (node_modules, target, .venv, build, Pods, DerivedData and more across 22 stacks) in projects you have not touched in a while, and moves it to the Trash. Coming back to a project? mothball wake reinstalls what it needs.
Install
macOS app (Apple silicon and Intel, macOS 11+)
Download Mothball-0.1.0.dmg, open it and drag Mothball to Applications. It is signed and notarised.
Or with Homebrew:
brew tap herocodess/tap
brew trust herocodess/tap
brew install --cask mothball
Command line only
go install github.com/herocodess/mothball/cli/mothball@v0.1.0
or download the binary for your system below.
What's in 0.1.0
- Menu bar app with a background service and Autopilot: keeps free space above a target you set, clearing the longest idle projects first
- 22 rule packs: JavaScript and TypeScript, Angular, Rust, Python, Gradle (Java, Kotlin, Android), Maven, sbt, Swift Package Manager, CocoaPods, Flutter, .NET, Ruby, PHP, Elixir, Erlang, Haskell, Zig, CMake, Unity, Unreal, Godot and Terraform
- Tool caches: Xcode, simulators, npm, pnpm, yarn, bun, pip, uv, CocoaPods, Homebrew, Gradle and others, cleaned with each tool's own command where it has one
- Safe by design: never touches git tracked files, never matches by folder name alone, skips projects with uncommitted work, re-checks every folder right before moving it, and only ever moves to the Trash
.mothballignoreto keep anything you choose
Notes
- macOS is the main target for this release. The Windows and Linux command line builds pass the full test suite but are early; the desktop app for them comes next.
- Mothball asks for Full Disk Access so it can see projects in Desktop, Documents and Downloads. Without it, those folders are skipped.
Checksums are in checksums-0.1.0.txt.
