Problem
The state-management modules (vfs, state, kv, sqlite) have been neglected for a few months and ought to be cleaned up a bit.
Solution
Refactor the modules to reduce repetition and do less cloning.

@bitful-pannul still need to figure out how to close files in vfs. Inclined to not keep them open at all?
