Short description of the problem:
Overriding $tabs-md-tab-font-size has no effect. $tabs-md-tab-font-size is defined, but is not used in .tabs-md .tab-button
What behavior are you expecting?
Overriding $tabs-md-tab-font-size sets the font size of the inactive tabs in MD
