Setup: Voice

Installation and configuration for Ionrift Voice.

Ionrift Voice is an Early Access module available to Ionrift Patreon subscribers (Acolyte tier and above). Because live Discord bridging relies on dedicated cloud audio relays, entitlement is verified through your personal manifest URL minted on the Module Shelf.

What Voice adds

Foundry's built-in audio is flat and plays across the entire canvas equally. Ionrift Voice introduces dynamic tabletop acoustics, positioning each player's speech on their token:

Feature Built-in AV With Ionrift Voice
Canvas proximity ❌ Flat volume ✅ Distance falloff and stereo panning from token
Wall occlusion ❌ Walls do not block voice ✅ Closed doors and stone walls muffle or silence speech
Open archways ❌ Flat volume ✅ Audio carries naturally around corners and corridors
In-character shout ❌ No dynamics ✅ Hold shout key (~) to push voice through one wall
Private whispers ❌ Separate Discord calls ✅ Canvas-targeted whisper; ambient audio ducks to 50%, target replies privately to GM
Tabletop lobbies ❌ Always all-or-nothing ✅ Nominate splash pages or world maps to disable proximity
Positional SFX ❌ Everywhere at once ✅ Attacks and spells from Ionrift Resonance inherit map acoustics

Requirements

  • Foundry VTT v12 or v14
  • Ionrift Library v3.0.0+

How it works

1. Discord bridge & deafening

Ionrift Voice uses a companion bot that connects to your Discord voice channel and relays speech directly into Foundry's Web Audio graph:

  1. Open Configure Settings > Ionrift Voice.
  2. Under Discord Bridge, connect the bot to your session's voice channel.
  3. Match each player's Foundry user account to their Discord handle.
  4. Player setup: During the session, players join the Discord channel as usual and deafen their Discord client. All audio playback is heard directly through Foundry VTT.

2. The voice HUD pill

A minimal status pill sits in the lower-left corner of the canvas:

  • Audio meter: Shows real-time transmission levels.
  • Acoustic mode: Indicates your current listening mode (Proximity, Tabletop Lobby, or Private Whisper).
  • Mute button: Mute your microphone or mute incoming speech.
  • Volume drawer: Click to open per-player volume sliders and reset controls.

3. Shouting & whispers

  • In-character shouting: Hold the shout key (tilde ~ by default). A pulse expands from your token on the canvas, projecting your voice over double the normal distance and penetrating one wall barrier.
  • GM whispers: The GM can trigger a private whisper to a single player token. On activation, all background music and other voices duck to 50% for both the GM and the recipient. The targeted player's microphone is routed back exclusively to the GM, keeping the conversation completely secret from the rest of the table.

4. Tabletop lobbies (Scene acoustics)

Some scenes—like world maps, splash lobbies, or resting safehouses—do not need distance falloff:

  1. Right-click the Scene in the navigation bar or directory and open Configure.
  2. On the Basics tab, locate the Voice Acoustics section.
  3. Check Disable Proximity Voice.
  4. All participants on that scene now speak and hear each other globally without distance or wall muffling.
