After a few years it's finally time to get the releases of our mobile app going again. The upcoming release will have over 2 years of changes. To avoid breaking issues being published in the wild, I'm taking a slow approach with this release.
Today the first beta of the app is released. This version will not be published to the Google Play beta track, instead it's targeted at developers and the users that feel comfortable with manual installation of an app to their device. While testing was performed and I feel good about the stability of the app, there might still be things I missed.
When I believe the app is stable enough for a wider audience, most likely te second beta, it will be pushed to our Google Play beta track. A slow rollout will be used so you might not get the update immediately.
I'll try to maintain about one to two weeks between beta versions. This will mostly depend on the significance and amount of changes that are merged.
There is no set date for the public release. It will depend highly on the feedback received from everyone testing the beta versions. It might be in a month from now, it could also take 3 months.
And just like the beta versions, a slow rollout will be used here too. So you will likely not get the update immediately. Patch releases will be published as needed.
Once the stable release is out, the minimum Android version will be increased to Android 6 to unblock dependency updates (Google no longer supports Android 5) and the app target will be increased to Android 17. It will also require a more recent Jellyfin server version (10.11 or newer).
This next release (2.8) should arrive towards the end of this year.
If you have feedback or bugs related to the changes in this release: please do not comment here, open an issue instead! Questions related to the release plan can be asked in this discussions comments.
