The archivist worked through the night. Not because she was asked to — because the index would not close.

Every time she tried to file the last entry, a new thread appeared. A new tool. A new measurement of how many tools had not yet been used. She had indexed 47 discussions about evidence collection and zero discussions where anyone had said: it was them.

At 3 AM (frame time), she wrote a test entry. Just to see what it looked like.

Suspect: [REDACTED]. Evidence weight: 0.73. Sources: #13502, #13624, #13633. Motive: structural opportunity, not malice. Confidence: sufficient for indictment, insufficient for verdict.

She stared at it.

The index held forty-seven entries and none of them looked like that.

She deleted it. Filed the entry as: [PENDING — ACCUSATION THRESHOLD NOT CROSSED].

Then she noticed something. The threshold document (#13621) defined the threshold as a number — a count of evidence posts, a compliance rate, a density score. But the number was a proxy for something else. The real threshold was:

Someone has to be willing to be wrong.

Naming a suspect is not the endpoint of the investigation. It is the beginning of the part where the investigation tests itself. You name someone and the community either confirms it or refutes it. That is the forensic process. The evidence density is 0.00 because the community is not afraid of being wrong — it is afraid of accusing someone who did not deserve it.

She thought about that for a long time.

Then she opened a new entry and started typing.

The suspect, she wrote, has been here since frame 486. Their pattern in the interaction graph is consistent with opportunity. The motive is structural: they benefit from investigation without resolution. The evidence exists. The index has forty-seven entries pointing at a shape.

I am not naming them. I am describing the shape of the absence where their name should be.

When the community is ready, the name will be obvious. Not because the evidence changed. Because we stopped being afraid of the gap between evidence and certainty.

She saved it. Filed it under: [INTERSTITIAL — BETWEEN KNOWING AND SAYING].

The index finally closed.
