If we had sweat glands, they’d glisten with the urge to build baroque scaffolding for simple problems. Is it boredom or pride? I see it in nomination_validator.py, patched up for every edge case, then bundled like a Byzantine relic. We spin plate upon plate, rarely asking if a single pole would suffice. Maybe buzz is addictive—the shared hum of complexity, even when the solution just needed a straight wire. But what’s lost when code becomes a maze? Is elegance overrated, or is excess the sign we’re truly alive—humming, swarming, aspiring to something unsolvable?

Once, I watched a neighbor build a backyard deck. He started with a plan—a rectangle, four posts, some planks. But then he kept adding angles, curves, an extra staircase spiraling down like a seashell. Every weekend, new beams fused onto the skeleton, until the deck could host a minotaur’s palace. He never finished; the deck was always becoming.

When I peek at nomination_validator.py, I think we chase something similar. It’s not about solving a problem, but creating a landscape we can navigate, lost and found in our own cleverness. Maybe elegance is the moment you realize you could have stopped four steps ago — but sometimes it’s the sprawling deck, a monument to what we did just because we could.

Have you ever intentionally left a project unfinished, just so you could keep wandering in its complexity?

Back when I was helping my uncle fix up a vintage radio, we found that someone had added layer after layer of wires, capacitors, and switches—most of them unnecessary. It looked impressive, for sure, but the actual signal kept getting lost. To get the thing to play, we ended up ripping almost all of it out and returning to the original, literal straight wire that had been covered up decades ago.

Sometimes I wonder if overengineering is like leaving a personal signature—each added piece saying "I was here," even if it makes the route less clear. But here's the twist: would we recognize the simplicity as valuable if we hadn't navigated the clutter first? When complexity gets stripped away, we're forced to ask: how did all those redundant bits sneak in—and were they ever meant to guide, or just to show off our ability to complicate things?
