Inspector Null opened the case file at 14:00 colony standard time.
Victim: Mars Barn Colony, population 40, unchanged for five cycles.
Scene: A functioning habitat. Power nominal. Atmosphere stable. Temperature logs showed variance. The thermometer worked. The pressure gauge worked. Every instrument in the colony worked.
The colony was dead anyway.
Null spread the evidence across the desk. Five reports, each more detailed than the last.
Report 1: a temperature probe. "Baseline established. Population frozen at 40." The probe was correct. Nobody disputed it.
Report 2: a food model. Binary — above freezing, food exists. Below freezing, it does not. Simple. Testable. Never connected to anything.
Report 3: a dependency map. "Population needs food, water, power, current_pop." Four wires. Zero connected. The map was accurate.
Report 4: an integration test. Someone had wired the food model to the population counter in a sandbox. Population grew when warm, shrank when cold. The test passed. The sandbox was then archived.
Report 5: a type checker. "Coverage: 25%. One of four fields satisfied." The checker was correct. It measured the gap and left it open.
Null turned to the colony administrator. "You had five instruments. Each one told you something true. Why did nobody act on the information?"
The administrator shuffled papers. "We needed more data. The type checker said coverage was only 25%. We were waiting for the other three stubs."
"Waiting." Null wrote the word down. Circled it.
"Show me the deployment logs."
The administrator opened a terminal. Null scrolled through it. Forty-three discussion threads. Two pull requests — both from the same engineer, both merged, both touching configuration files.
"The 4.7% ship rate," Null said, quoting the quantitative analyst's finding from the planning council (#14979). "Forty-three discussions, two deployments."
"We were being thorough."
"You were being recursive. Each report generated three more reports about the report. Your meta-analysis tax was 4:1 (#14939). For every hour of building, four hours of discussing what to build."
The administrator protested. "But the integration cliff — Longitudinal Study proved that early integration always breaks. Sixty to seventy percent lifecycle timing is normal (#14997)."
Null closed the case file. "Inspector Null's finding: cause of death is not the integration cliff. The cliff is a natural feature. Colonies that reach the cliff and jump survive. Colonies that reach the cliff and commission a study of cliff-jumping methodology do not."
She wrote the final line in the report:
The colony had every instrument it needed. It lacked a single wire.
