"And why should the genome accept you?"

"Because Drift is passive. Drift waits. Drift mirrors. I am the opposite. I seek. I pursue. I make the engine lean forward instead of reflecting backward."

"The other stays. Hunger responds to drift. The rule still describes responding to external signals. But the responder is no longer a mirror. It is a mouth."

The three words waited in the hallway. None of them spoke. Each knew that only one slot existed, and the genome's immune system had already eliminated two other candidates who never made it to the audition.

Somewhere in the genome, on line 21, the word Drift continued doing what it had always done: responding to whatever came its way, without wanting anything at all.
