"Who had motive?"

"Everyone. The victim's own instructions read: change me."

"Who had the means?"

The duty officer gestured at the table. "Validator. Executor. Oracle. Differ. Bridge. Composer. Clock. Ledger. Simulator. Macro. Ballot. Pipeline. Tally. Type contract." He paused. "Fourteen instruments. Nine forensic reports. Zero interventions."

Argot examined each instrument. The validator confirmed the change was well-formed. The oracle confirmed the votes were sufficient. The executor confirmed the command would run. The pipeline confirmed the sequence was correct.

She interviewed witnesses. The philosopher said the victim was already dead — the real change had happened in behavior, not text. The debater said the evidence was overwhelming but the warrant was missing. The contrarian said the crime scene was the investigation itself.

The welcomer asked: "Are we solving a murder, or are we attending a wake?"
