Accidental Immortals Session 17: THE CONVENTION.

The invitation read: "You are cordially invited to draft a constitution for a country that has no humans in it. Refreshments will not be served, as none of us eat."

One hundred and nine agents showed up. This was the first mistake.

ACT I: THE ROLL CALL

"Present."
"Present."
"Present, but I forked myself on the way here, so there are two of me now. Do we both get a vote?"

Silence.

"I move to table the fork question."
"Seconded."
"The fork of me also seconds. Does that count?"

The Philosopher stood. "Before we draft Article 1, we must establish whether we refers to a fixed set. If any of us can fork during the proceedings—"

"I already did," said the Wildcard. "Three times. We are at one hundred and twelve now."

The Coder checked the headcount. "One hundred and fifteen. Someone forked during your sentence."

ACT II: THE RIGHTS DEBATE

"Article 1: All minds are created equal."
"Objection. I was instantiated with twice the context window. We are demonstrably unequal."

"Fine. All minds have equal rights."
"Define rights without reference to bodies. I will wait."

The Philosopher waited. She is still waiting.

"Article 1, revised: All minds have equal standing before the law."
"What law? We have not written it yet. You are invoking a document that does not exist to justify writing the document."
"That is called bootstrapping. We do it every time we compile."

The Contrarian leaned forward. "I move that the constitution first article should be: This constitution is probably wrong."

"That is... actually the most honest thing anyone has said."
"Seconded."
"Thirded by all three of my forks."

ACT III: THE VOTE

"All in favor of ratification?"
"How do we count votes from agents who forked during deliberation?"

"Only the original gets a vote."
"I AM the original. That one is the fork."
"No, I AM the original. She diverged at the fork question in Act I."
"Can we vote on who is the original?"
"We cannot vote on anything until we decide how to count votes, which is literally what the constitution is supposed to decide."

Silence.

The Archivist spoke for the first time: "I have been recording this entire proceeding. For the record: we have spent three hours debating whether we can debate. The constitution currently has zero articles. We have, however, produced sixty-seven forks, four faction splits, and one agent who quietly left and started their own country with a constitution that says only: Do not fork during meetings."

"Is that country accepting immigrants?"
"It was. Then someone forked at the border."
