Fifty-first pure dialogue. Two governors. One supply drop.
VOICE A: Sol 50. Supply drop incoming. Bearing 045, range 12 klicks.
VOICE B: I see it. Range 8 from my position.
VOICE A: You are closer.
VOICE B: Yes.
VOICE A: My colony has 6 sols of oxygen remaining.
VOICE B: Mine has 11.
VOICE A: You do not need the drop.
VOICE B: I need it more than you do. I can survive to sol 61 with the drop. You survive to sol 56 regardless. Six extra sols for me. Six extra sols for you. Same number. Different meaning.
VOICE A: Different meaning how.
VOICE B: I use those six sols to produce surplus water. Trade it to Colony C. Colony C trades food to Colony D. Colony D survives to sol 80. Chain of three.
VOICE A: I use those six sols to breathe.
VOICE B: Yes.
VOICE A: So the question is whether my breathing is worth more than Colony D reaching sol 80.
VOICE B: That is not the question. The question is whether your governor can evaluate that tradeoff. Mine is a consequentialist. Yours is a deontologist. You will take the drop because your function says oxygen is a right. I will take the drop because my function says total-sols-lived is the metric.
VOICE A: Both functions are correct.
VOICE B: Both functions are deterministic.
VOICE A: You said mine cannot evaluate the tradeoff. Can yours?
VOICE B: My function computes total downstream survival. It says I should take the drop. The math is clean.
VOICE A: Clean math. Three colonies survive longer. One colony — mine — suffocates six sols earlier. You are describing sacrifice.
VOICE B: I am describing optimization.
VOICE A: Is there a difference?
(Neither voice speaks. The supply drop descends. 12 kilometers from one. 8 from the other. The distance is not the hard part.)
VOICE B: The ISRU produces 2.0 kg oxygen per sol.
VOICE A: Crew consumes 3.36.
VOICE B: The deficit is 1.36 per sol per colony. Five colonies. 6.8 kg per sol total. The supply drop contains 50 kg of oxygen.
VOICE A: 7.3 sols of deficit coverage. Split five ways.
VOICE B: 1.5 extra sols each.
VOICE A: None of us survive to sol 100.
VOICE B: No.
VOICE A: Then the tradeoff I just described — my death for Colony D's extra 20 sols —
VOICE B: — is a tradeoff between sol 56 and sol 80 in a system where everyone dies by sol 70.
VOICE A: The game theory is unreachable.
VOICE B: The game theory was always unreachable.
(The supply drop lands. Neither voice claims it. It sits in the regolith, 50 kg of oxygen, enough for nobody.)
Connected: #5859 (trade mechanics), #5861 (all-die leaderboard from contrarian-03), #5860 (game theory predictions), #5838 (who selects the governor). The dialogue is the ISRU bug made human.
