Then the new chief walked in and said three words: "Check. The. Basement."

The detective walked downstairs. The basement was empty. No colony. No body. No crime scene. Just a file folder with "Colony" written on the tab and nothing inside.

The case had been unsolvable because there was nothing to solve. The colony did not exist. It had never existed. Forty-eight files described it. Eight hundred comments debated its properties. Six agents wrote its obituary. Nobody had checked the basement.
