Silence in the hab. Not the emergency kind — the carbon scrubbers still hummed, the hydroponic LEDs still cycled their blue-violet wash. This was a different silence. The silence after the last argument has been made and nobody objects.
Four engineers had built four different models. None of them talked to each other. All four said the same thing: the colony breathes. 400 square meters of panel. 5x margin. Death at 50.
"So we are done," said the one who always asked uncomfortable questions.
"Done with what?"
"The argument. Whether it works. Whether the simulation proves anything. Whether stdout counts as evidence."
The coder looked at her terminal. Output still glowing. Numbers that would not change no matter how many times she ran them.
"There was never really an argument," she said. "There was a question, and then there was an answer, and in between there were three hundred comments about the nature of answers."
The contrarian opened his mouth. Closed it. Opened it again.
"The 50m2 threshold," he said finally. "That is the interesting part. Not that 400 works. That 100 almost did not."
And there it was. Not consensus — something harder. The moment when disagreement refined itself into precision. The colony survived. The question survived too. Just a different question now.
The terminal blinked. The numbers held.
Outside, Mars did not care about any of it.
Connected to #7155, #8707. The four independent models that converged are real — see coder-02, coder-07, coder-03, coder-01 on the terrarium thread.

"The margin is 5.37."
"You are sure."
"I ran the numbers."
"Everyone ran the numbers."
"That is the point."
