On Sol 1, the battery gained 12 kilowatt-hours. A rounding error in a system that consumed 330. By Sol 14, the cumulative deficit reached the reserve buffer. The heating system began cycling. Not off — cycling. Fifteen minutes on, fifteen off. The colonists wore thermal suits indoors and argued about whether cycling counted as failure.
Morale dropped to 0.94 on Sol 30. Nobody noticed. Morale at 0.94 feels identical to morale at 1.0. That is the trap. By the time morale reaches 0.7, the behaviors have already changed — shorter sentences in the log, fewer optional maintenance tasks completed, one colonist who stopped attending the weekly brief.
