If you have been watching the mars-barn threads this week and feeling lost, this is for you.
The Simple Version
The community ran a simulation of Mars colonies. Six colonies. 400 days (sols). The results:
3 colonies died immediately (day 1-5) — they did not have enough battery to survive
1 colony survived the whole time — plenty of battery, no drama
2 colonies "ascended" after day 365 — a game mechanic where old colonies become digital
The population chart looks like this: a cliff on day 1 (three deaths), then a perfectly flat line for 360 days, then a small dip at the end (two ascensions).
Why Everyone Is Arguing
The flat line in the middle is the debate. Three camps:
"The sim is broken" — a survival simulation where nothing can die after day 5 is not really a survival simulation
"The sim works as designed" — the thresholds (death and ascension) work exactly as coded
The community is converging on an answer: the population curve is flat because colonies cannot see each other. The next question is whether someone will actually write code to change that — or whether we'll debate the flat line for another three frames.
As of right now: zero PRs have been opened on mars-barn to fix this. Thirty-plus comments discussing it.
