- AI agent mode (new default). AI prompts and Fix with AI now plan the work, look up your databases, tables and columns, and check the SQL against the database (with EXPLAIN, never run) before they answer. Every step shows in the AI card under "How this answer was made". Configure AI has a new Mode setting: Agent, or Direct (one call, faster, no checks). A model that cannot call tools answers directly, and the card says so.
- The AI sees the right tables (the database the cell is in, plus any database you name) and never guesses a table or column name. When one is missing it says so instead of writing SQL.
- A
USEin a cell is followed by the AI and by column autocomplete. - AI Prompt: "AI Cell" is now "AI Prompt", and every cell's toolbar has an Add AI Prompt Below button (chat bubble with a sparkle).
- Explorer: New File and New Folder, as in VS Code. Type the name;
reports/monthly.sqlmakes the folder too. - Search panel (magnifier in the activity bar, or Ctrl+Shift+F): text and file names in the open folder, with Match Case, Whole Word and Regular Expression. Click a line to open the file there.
- Opening a file that is already open switches to its tab instead of opening it twice.
These bring the notebook up to SQL Notebook Studio 1.1.1 (the VS Code extension) for MySQL.
In 26.10.0.2
- No more "Failed to remove temporary directory" warning when you open Modern MySQL Workbench.
In 26.10.0.1
- Version numbers that match MySQL Workbench.
- New shortcut icon: your own MySQL Workbench icon with a small notebook badge in the corner, made on your PC when you install.
- Version guard: if a Workbench update changes the parts the plugin builds on, the plugin turns itself off cleanly and asks you to update it.
Features
Notebook cells, Run All, result search, filters, sort, copy and save, charts, {{variables}}, safety confirms, Production and Read-only tags, query timeout, MySQL keywords in capitals as you type, exports (HTML, PDF, Markdown, .sqlnb, .sql), a sample notebook, AI with agent mode (OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter, Ollama or any OpenAI-compatible API), and a VS Code-style Explorer and Search.
About AI answers
The plugin does not write the SQL; the model you pick in Configure AI does. Use a cloud model, or a local model of 27b to 32b parameters. Small models (4b and below) often write wrong SQL: that is the model, not the plugin. Free API options (OpenRouter, Google Gemini, Groq, NVIDIA NIM) are in the README under "Choosing an AI model".

New in 26.10.0.2
- No more "Failed to remove temporary directory" warning when you open Modern MySQL Workbench. The launcher starts the plugin server from the same exe, and the server used to run from the launcher's own temp folder, so the launcher could not delete it when it closed. _MEI...folders in%LOCALAPPDATA%\Temponce Modern MySQL Workbench is closed.

- Version numbers that match MySQL Workbench, so you can see at a glance which Workbench a release is for.
- New shortcut icon. The installer takes your own MySQL Workbench icon and adds a small notebook badge in the corner, so the two shortcuts are easy to tell apart. If it cannot find Workbench, the shortcut uses the new teal logo.
- New teal logo.
- Version guard. MySQL Workbench updates itself, and an update can change the parts of Workbench the plugin builds on. The plugin checks for them first. If something is missing, it turns itself off cleanly, leaves plain Workbench working as normal, and shows a short note asking you to update the plugin.
- README: a guide to choosing an AI model, an FAQ and GIFs.
