Important

This is a PLUGIN for MySQL Workbench, not a separate Workbench. It does not install MySQL Workbench or a MySQL server. Install MySQL Workbench 26 first (free, from Oracle). Modern MySQL Workbench then opens your own Workbench with the notebook, AI, charts and exports added.

A free plugin by KGP Talkie that adds a Jupyter-style notebook, AI, result charts, exports and a VS Code-style workspace to your own MySQL Workbench 26.

For MySQL Workbench 26.10.0. Versions now follow MySQL Workbench: the first three numbers (26.10.0) are the Workbench version this release is made and tested for, the last number is our release for it. This release replaces 10.1 (same features, new version number, new icons).

Install

  1. Download Modern-MySQL-Workbench-Setup.exe below.
  2. Run it. It installs for your user only (no admin rights) in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Modern MySQL Workbench and adds a Modern MySQL Workbench shortcut to the Desktop and the Start menu.
  3. Open Modern MySQL Workbench.

Needs Windows 10 or 11 and MySQL Workbench 26 (tested with 26.10.0). MySQL Workbench itself is not changed: plain Workbench still opens from its own shortcut. Close plain Workbench before you open Modern MySQL Workbench.

Already have 10.1? Run the new installer; it updates in place.

The installer is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn. Click More info, then Run anyway.

To remove it: Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Modern MySQL Workbench > Uninstall.

New in 26.10.0.1

  • Version numbers that match MySQL Workbench, so you can see at a glance which Workbench a release is for.
  • New shortcut icon. The installer takes your own MySQL Workbench icon and adds a small notebook badge in the corner, so the two shortcuts are easy to tell apart. If it cannot find Workbench, the shortcut uses the new teal logo.
  • New teal logo.
  • Version guard. MySQL Workbench updates itself, and an update can change the parts of Workbench the plugin builds on. The plugin checks for them first. If something is missing, it turns itself off cleanly, leaves plain Workbench working as normal, and shows a short note asking you to update the plugin.
  • README: a guide to choosing an AI model, an FAQ and GIFs.

Features

Notebook cells, Run All, result search, filters, sort, copy and save, charts, {{variables}}, safety confirms, Production and Read-only tags, query timeout, MySQL keywords in capitals as you type, exports (HTML, PDF, Markdown, .sqlnb, .sql), a sample notebook, and AI (OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter, Ollama or any OpenAI-compatible API).

About AI answers

The plugin does not write the SQL; the model you pick in Configure AI does. Use a cloud model, or a local model of 27b to 32b parameters. Small models (4b and below) often write wrong SQL: that is the model, not the plugin. Free API options (OpenRouter, Google Gemini, Groq, NVIDIA NIM) are in the README under "Choosing an AI model".
