Release notes:

- Total internal overhaul using `esbuild`.

This would normally be `v4.0.0-pre1`, but `v4.0.0-rc1` already exists. Since release candidates generally come after previews, this release is marked as `rc2` rather than `pre1` to avoid "going backwards".
