x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu pre built binary requires glibc 2.38, which is a little too high

debian 12 only has glibc 2.36 and ubuntu 22.04 only has 2.34. maybe we should release a binary that can run on more distros.

ci release like https://github.com/spencerwooo/bitsrun-rs/blob/main/.github/workflows/release.yml seems simpler than manual builds. and github provide ubuntu 20.04, 22.04 and 24.04. with that we can build a binary that linked to lower version glibc

cargo zigbuild (uses zig as linker) can output binaries against older versions of glibc without having to install a separate toolchain or an older distro, it makes cross compilation stupid easy too so long as you have the targets installed:

$ cargo install --locked cargo-zigbuild # you need zig installed on your system for this
...
$ cargo zigbuild --target x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu.2.17
$ cargo zigbuild --target armv7-unknown-linux-gnueabihf.2.17 # etc etc

will output a binary that requires just glibc 2.17
