Disabling performance cpufreq governer in kernel config causes build errors #87
Comments
I took a quick look at the code... Ondemand isn't "hardcoded" anywhere, its just that performance has no cpufreq_frequency_table_target function since its always at max frequency, etc. |
# cpufreq-set -g performance # cpufreq-info ... available cpufreq governors: fantasy, interactive, conservative, ondemand, userspace, powersave, performance current policy: frequency should be within 300 MHz and 1.03 GHz. The governor "performance" may decide which speed to use within this range. current CPU frequency is 1.01 GHz (asserted by call to hardware). ...
|
@romanrm To answer 2), it looks like he wanted to have performance as default bootup gov and switching it from defconfig didn't work. |
Yeah I wanted to speed up booting and framebuffer rendering by always running at max frequency. Hmm I may take a look at why it requires the frequency table. It shouldn't need it otherwise the broken governors should be removed from the default governor option in the config menu, EDIT: Yeah the build errors come from two places, first the https://github.com/linux-sunxi/linux-sunxi/blob/sunxi-3.0/arch/arm/mach-sun4i/cpu-freq/Makefile will not link cpu-freq-table.c if kernel config says frequency table is not needed, and as @romanrm says https://github.com/linux-sunxi/linux-sunxi/blob/sunxi-3.0/arch/arm/mach-sun4i/cpu-freq/cpu-freq.c fails when cpufreq_frequency_table_target is not compiled as when no frequency table is compiled. So I guess I will need to look at how other cpufreq drivers are written to handle this. EDIT 2: Basically if a driver uses the table stuff then the Kconfig needs to ensure CPU_FREQ_TABLE is selected. |
Okay what I propose is this, Add something like this to the cpufreq Kconfig: Then change the makefile to use CPU_FREQ_SUN4I for selecting the cpufreq files. This way it ensures that CPU_FREQ_TABLE is always built. |
This seems to be the proper way to do this, did you test and it helps solve the previous build failure?
I don't remember saying anything of that sort, though :p |
I will test it this evening when I reboot back into Linux. Looking at the Makefiles I will also test if something breaks when you disable CONFIG_PM... |
Well it looks like commit 0d0fa65 fixed the cpufreq table issue. |
Excellent! |
Isolated balloon pages can wrongly end up in LRU lists when migrate_pages() finishes its round without draining all the isolated page list. The same issue can happen when reclaim_clean_pages_from_list() tries to reclaim pages from an isolated page list, before migration, in the CMA path. Such balloon page leak opens a race window against LRU lists shrinkers that leads us to the following kernel panic: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000000000000028 IP: [<ffffffff810c2625>] shrink_page_list+0x24e/0x897 PGD 3cda2067 PUD 3d713067 PMD 0 Oops: 0000 [#1] SMP CPU: 0 PID: 340 Comm: kswapd0 Not tainted 3.12.0-rc1-22626-g4367597 #87 Hardware name: Bochs Bochs, BIOS Bochs 01/01/2011 RIP: shrink_page_list+0x24e/0x897 RSP: 0000:ffff88003da499b8 EFLAGS: 00010286 RAX: 0000000000000000 RBX: ffff88003e82bd60 RCX: 00000000000657d5 RDX: 0000000000000000 RSI: 000000000000031f RDI: ffff88003e82bd40 RBP: ffff88003da49ab0 R08: 0000000000000001 R09: 0000000081121a45 R10: ffffffff81121a45 R11: ffff88003c4a9a28 R12: ffff88003e82bd40 R13: ffff88003da0e800 R14: 0000000000000001 R15: ffff88003da49d58 FS: 0000000000000000(0000) GS:ffff88003fc00000(0000) knlGS:0000000000000000 CS: 0010 DS: 0000 ES: 0000 CR0: 0000000080050033 CR2: 00000000067d9000 CR3: 000000003ace5000 CR4: 00000000000407b0 Call Trace: shrink_inactive_list+0x240/0x3de shrink_lruvec+0x3e0/0x566 __shrink_zone+0x94/0x178 shrink_zone+0x3a/0x82 balance_pgdat+0x32a/0x4c2 kswapd+0x2f0/0x372 kthread+0xa2/0xaa ret_from_fork+0x7c/0xb0 Code: 80 7d 8f 01 48 83 95 68 ff ff ff 00 4c 89 e7 e8 5a 7b 00 00 48 85 c0 49 89 c5 75 08 80 7d 8f 00 74 3e eb 31 48 8b 80 18 01 00 00 <48> 8b 74 0d 48 8b 78 30 be 02 00 00 00 ff d2 eb RIP [<ffffffff810c2625>] shrink_page_list+0x24e/0x897 RSP <ffff88003da499b8> CR2: 0000000000000028 ---[ end trace 703d2451af6ffbfd ]--- Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception This patch fixes the issue, by assuring the proper tests are made at putback_movable_pages() & reclaim_clean_pages_from_list() to avoid isolated balloon pages being wrongly reinserted in LRU lists. …nk leaks The early call to br_stp_change_bridge_id in bridge's newlink can cause a memory leak if an error occurs during the newlink because the fdb entries are not cleaned up if a different lladdr was specified, also another minor issue is that it generates fdb notifications with ifindex = 0. Another unrelated memory leak is the bridge sysfs entries which get added on NETDEV_REGISTER event, but are not cleaned up in the newlink error path. To remove this special case the call to br_stp_change_bridge_id is done after netdev register and we cleanup the bridge on changelink error via br_dev_delete to plug all leaks. This patch makes netlink bridge destruction on newlink error the same as dellink and ioctl del which is necessary since at that point we have a fully initialized bridge device. pppoe_rcv() needs to look back at the Ethernet header in order to lookup the PPPoE session. Therefore we need to ensure that the mac header is big enough to contain an Ethernet header. cpuinfo_cur_freq gets current CPU frequency as detected by hardware while scaling_cur_freq last known CPU frequency. Some platforms may not allow checking the CPU frequency of an offline CPU or the associated resources may have been released via cpufreq_exit when the CPU gets offlined, in which case the policy would have been invalidated already. If we attempt to get current frequency from the hardware, it may result in hang or crash. For example on Juno, I see: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000000000000188 [0000000000000188] pgd=0000000000000000 Internal error: Oops: 96000004 [#1] PREEMPT SMP Modules linked in: CPU: 5 PID: 4202 Comm: cat Not tainted 4.20.0-08251-ga0f2c0318a15-dirty #87 Hardware name: ARM LTD ARM Juno Development Platform/ARM Juno Development Platform pstate: 40000005 (nZcv daif -PAN -UAO) pc : scmi_cpufreq_get_rate+0x34/0xb0 lr : scmi_cpufreq_get_rate+0x34/0xb0 Call trace: scmi_cpufreq_get_rate+0x34/0xb0 __cpufreq_get+0x34/0xc0 show_cpuinfo_cur_freq+0x24/0x78 show+0x40/0x60 sysfs_kf_seq_show+0xc0/0x148 kernfs_seq_show+0x44/0x50 seq_read+0xd4/0x480 kernfs_fop_read+0x15c/0x208 __vfs_read+0x60/0x188 vfs_read+0x94/0x150 ksys_read+0x6c/0xd8 __arm64_sys_read+0x24/0x30 el0_svc_common+0x78/0x100 el0_svc_handler+0x38/0x78 el0_svc+0x8/0xc ---[ end trace 3d1024e58f77f6b2 ]--- So fix the issue by checking if the policy is invalid early in __cpufreq_get before attempting to get the current frequency. Commit ebf7d1f ("bpf, x64: rework pro/epilogue and tailcall handling in JIT") added a tracker into check_max_stack_depth() which propagates the tail_call_reachable condition throughout the subprograms. This info is then assigned to the subprogram's func[i]->aux->tail_call_reachable. However, in the case of the rejection check upon JIT failure, env->prog->aux->tail_call_reachable is used. func[0]->aux->tail_call_reachable which represents the main program's information did not propagate this to the outer env->prog->aux, though. During testing of f263a81 ("bpf: Track subprog poke descriptors correctly and fix use-after-free") under various failure conditions, for example, when jit_subprogs() fails and tries to clean up the program to be run under the interpreter, we ran into the following freeze: [...] linux-sunxi#127/8 tailcall_bpf2bpf_3:FAIL [...] [ 92.041251] BUG: KASAN: slab-out-of-bounds in ___bpf_prog_run+0x1b9d/0x2e20 [ 92.042408] Read of size 8 at addr ffff88800da67f68 by task test_progs/682 [ 92.043707] [ 92.044030] CPU: 1 PID: 682 Comm: test_progs Tainted: G O 5.13.0-53301-ge6c08cb33a30-dirty linux-sunxi#87 [ 92.045542] Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996), BIOS 1.13.0-1ubuntu1 04/01/2014 [ 92.046785] Call Trace: [ 92.047171] ? __bpf_prog_run_args64+0xc0/0xc0 [ 92.047773] ? __bpf_prog_run_args32+0x8b/0xb0 [ 92.048389] ? __bpf_prog_run_args64+0xc0/0xc0 [ 92.049019] ? ktime_get+0x117/0x130 [...] // few hundred [similar] lines more [ 92.659025] ? ktime_get+0x117/0x130 [ 92.659845] ? __bpf_prog_run_args64+0xc0/0xc0 [ 92.660738] ? __bpf_prog_run_args32+0x8b/0xb0 [ 92.661528] ? __bpf_prog_run_args64+0xc0/0xc0 [ 92.662378] ? print_usage_bug+0x50/0x50 [ 92.663221] ? print_usage_bug+0x50/0x50 [ 92.664077] ? bpf_ksym_find+0x9c/0xe0 [ 92.664887] ? ktime_get+0x117/0x130 [ 92.665624] ? kernel_text_address+0xf5/0x100 [ 92.666529] ? __kernel_text_address+0xe/0x30 [ 92.667725] ? unwind_get_return_address+0x2f/0x50 [ 92.668854] ? ___bpf_prog_run+0x15d4/0x2e20 [ 92.670185] ? ktime_get+0x117/0x130 [ 92.671130] ? __bpf_prog_run_args64+0xc0/0xc0 [ 92.672020] ? __bpf_prog_run_args32+0x8b/0xb0 [ 92.672860] ? __bpf_prog_run_args64+0xc0/0xc0 [ 92.675159] ? ktime_get+0x117/0x130 [ 92.677074] ? lock_is_held_type+0xd5/0x130 [ 92.678662] ? ___bpf_prog_run+0x15d4/0x2e20 [ 92.680046] ? ktime_get+0x117/0x130 [ 92.681285] ? __bpf_prog_run32+0x6b/0x90 [ 92.682601] ? __bpf_prog_run64+0x90/0x90 [ 92.683636] ? lock_downgrade+0x370/0x370 [ 92.684647] ? mark_held_locks+0x44/0x90 [ 92.685652] ? ktime_get+0x117/0x130 [ 92.686752] ? lockdep_hardirqs_on+0x79/0x100 [ 92.688004] ? ktime_get+0x117/0x130 [ 92.688573] ? __cant_migrate+0x2b/0x80 [ 92.689192] ? bpf_test_run+0x2f4/0x510 [ 92.689869] ? bpf_test_timer_continue+0x1c0/0x1c0 [ 92.690856] ? rcu_read_lock_bh_held+0x90/0x90 [ 92.691506] ? __kasan_slab_alloc+0x61/0x80 [ 92.692128] ? eth_type_trans+0x128/0x240 [ 92.692737] ? __build_skb+0x46/0x50 [ 92.693252] ? bpf_prog_test_run_skb+0x65e/0xc50 [ 92.693954] ? bpf_prog_test_run_raw_tp+0x2d0/0x2d0 [ 92.694639] ? __fget_light+0xa1/0x100 [ 92.695162] ? bpf_prog_inc+0x23/0x30 [ 92.695685] ? __sys_bpf+0xb40/0x2c80 [ 92.696324] ? bpf_link_get_from_fd+0x90/0x90 [ 92.697150] ? mark_held_locks+0x24/0x90 [ 92.698007] ? lockdep_hardirqs_on_prepare+0x124/0x220 [ 92.699045] ? finish_task_switch+0xe6/0x370 [ 92.700072] ? lockdep_hardirqs_on+0x79/0x100 [ 92.701233] ? finish_task_switch+0x11d/0x370 [ 92.702264] ? __switch_to+0x2c0/0x740 [ 92.703148] ? mark_held_locks+0x24/0x90 [ 92.704155] ? __x64_sys_bpf+0x45/0x50 [ 92.705146] ? do_syscall_64+0x35/0x80 [ 92.706953] ? entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x44/0xae [...] Turns out that the program rejection from e411901 ("bpf: allow for tailcalls in BPF subprograms for x64 JIT") is buggy since env->prog->aux->tail_call_reachable is never true. Commit ebf7d1f ("bpf, x64: rework pro/epilogue and tailcall handling in JIT") added a tracker into check_max_stack_depth() which propagates the tail_call_reachable condition throughout the subprograms. This info is then assigned to the subprogram's func[i]->aux->tail_call_reachable. However, in the case of the rejection check upon JIT failure, env->prog->aux->tail_call_reachable is used. func[0]->aux->tail_call_reachable which represents the main program's information did not propagate this to the outer env->prog->aux, though. Add this propagation into check_max_stack_depth() where it needs to belong so that the check can be done reliably. I was trying to force the kernel to use the performance cpufreq governor rather than ondemand since my Hackberry board runs of AC.
The first problem was that when I enabled the performance governor and made it the default the board still booted with ondemand as default.
I then removed all governors except performance and I got this link error:

Is the ondemand governor hard coded somewhere?
