[Linux Mint 17.3, Cinnamon 2.8] New windows are always showed in the non-primary monitor

When using more than one monitor setup, in case that the primary monitor is chosen to be the one on the right side, the windows of the application are opened in the non-primary monitor

Suggestion: always open new application windows in the primary monitor

the right screen stays on screen.. in my case it would be a happy bug because my right screen i follow irc in my case, probably a idea for a option in monitors but in working if i see in mate or xfce its kinda different , when switch workspace , right monitor does it also..

in my dualscreen setup with manjaro linux on freedrivers it does that not, right screen stays on one for me is no problem at all but i dont know if its the same as the issue above, for me is it a happy-bug :) that one monitor stays on one screen

@ringo32 There is an option in System Settings->Workspaces on the Settings tab called "Only use workspaces on the primary monitor". Do you have that enabled?

@JosephMcc mmm indeed that did it... generally use primary only for workspaces is here fine i can keep my eye on the other screen

i didnt know it where a option.. on that point cinnamon is more detailed atleast vs mate

I'm sort of having this issue in Cinnamon Cinnamon 4.2.3, Mint 19.2

It's not all windows that are affected, but some always seem to open on wrong monitor (opens on left monitor while my middle monitor is set as primary display, i have 3 monitors)
I've tried changing "Open newly opened windows" setting in "windows behavior", but that doesn't seem to help with the applications that seem to be affected by this. (certain steam games, System Monitor, ...)

I had this issue in the latest version of Linux Mint w/ Steam games on my dual setup, which made me have to switch back to KDE for now. I could not find a consistent way to fix it, eventually I got it where about 1/2 of my Steam games would launch on the right monitor, but the other 1/2 stubbornly wouldn't.

One thing that worked for some games was adding a taskbar to the non primary monitor. But others it had no effect, and neither did the suggestions mentioned above (from 5 years ago).

I start a game on my primary Laptop Monitor in Steam.
The Window opens on the same, but not primary, external monitor.
(I like cinnamon, but I think after years of usage with especially performance issues, after moving away from mate because of it's multi monitor bugs, I will move to Linux Mint 20 XFCE
I don't want to blame the devs, cinnamon just needs more volunteers)

Hey I was in almost the exact same boat as you several months ago - my Feb 3 post was after I had gone back to KDE Neon because of this issue. But about a month ago I decided to try again, and this time I did a little searching about this before making any big leaps. I found something that ended up working for me - that is, all Steam games that I have tested launch in the primary monitor.

It has to do with the taskbar, so much as I can tell. First thing I did, was add a task bar on the 2nd monitor. Several games that previously would launch on the 2nd monitor now started to launch in the primary. But something else I did that seemed to help with a couple more was I made the height of the taskbar taller than the one on my primary. That fixed (for me at least!) the remaining games.

I read online some other people who used the 'autohide' taskbar option fixed it for them, but I didnt try that.

I completely sympathize with your points - I stopped using Mint Cinnamon for several years because of performance issues, which seemed to have been solved when I came back, but the pesky multimonitor problems are still with us. Other than that, I think its the perfect UI.

I have a taskbar on every monitor

And on other workspaces the application list in the taskbar mixes their relations to the monitors

The external taskbar shows then my primary apps and vice versa

But how about the height of the taskbar? Make the alternates taller. Im curious if that fixes it for other people. Also give the autohide thing a shot on the primary.

My taskbar on the 2nd monitor is empty - no menu or anything. I would have left it off if not for this bug.

I switched both taskbars from the 2 not primary monitors from 40px to 27px and sadly the LibreOffice dialogues still open on a different monitor than the LibreOffice window.

But the taskbars acting weird here
I have a window list on ever taskbar to show the open window on their current monitor.
Using workspaces does sometimes show the icon on the wrong monitor or it doesn't get shown at all until i place the window on every workspace and back to the current one.

But that's a different issue.

Same issues here, even after the lock screen every singe app moves to the secondary monitor which is on my left.
