Idea: Global Menu

No idea how hard this would be to implement, but shouldn't most applications already have support for it because of Unity?

A native global menu as an applet would be amazing, especially for those users who aren't on Ubuntu like myself.

EDIT: It would be better if it were an applet since we can have a classic layout and put the applet at the top. Compatibility issues between versions might cause problems, though.

Yes an optional global menu would be nice. But I was also always wondering if it would be somehow possible to have an option to hide the menubar of applications by default and to enable it for the actual window by pressing the alt key. (I dont mean that by having an actual global menu but just a default hidden menubar that gets visible by pressing the alt key). Screenspace :)

It's just not the Mint way so I very much doubt this would be built into Cinnamon, but it would probably be a very popular extension/applet if it's possible.

Both of those are great ideas, too. I suppose a global menu could be an extension (which Cinnamon seems to be lacking in developers for), but the hidden menubar thing would be great for the Cinnamon devs to implement, like how KDE does it.

Cinnamon has so few extensions because of applets which integrate better with Cinnamon and are the preferred type of "add-on", that's why there are so few. You might as well say Gnome Shell seems to be lacking in developers for applets :o)

I think Cinnamon might become more popular, honestly, once it gets more and more options. The goal of it seems to be customization and that's what people want and loved about Gnome 2.

Solution to that is as an applet yeah. An applet is all I mean. Doesn't even have to be on by default.

As said above this would be an applet. It's not something we're interested in doing ourselves, but if someone else does it it will make no difference to the user in the end, and it might prove popular amongst Ubuntu and/or Mac users.

Implementing this from scratch won't be necessary; there's already a working applet for gnome 3 here: https://github.com/gnome-globalmenu/gnome-globalmenu/tree/gnome-3 Not sure what, if anything, needs to be changed for it to work in cinnamon though.

i forked github.com/gnome-globalmenu/gnome-globalmenu.git and it has alot of problems, for example it didn't compile and some javascript deprecated function. when i could it make it work it doesn't show the menu on the bar. Im not an expert on dbus or gtk, but i'd like to make this applet and im still learning programing. so if someone can be my mentor or something like that to help me out i'd be more than happy to make it

If Cinnamon had global menu applet and magic lamp effect. It would be my preferred Linux desktop.

Yah, it would be awesome to have Global Menu Bar. I think the easiest way would be to pick Unity bits and adapt it to Cinnamon. On other hand, Qt supports menu bar with appmenu-qt, and there was Globalmenu-bar in Gnome2 days.

Not sure what would be easiest path, to support both, qt and gtk2/gtk3 apps.

Now, as more and more GNOME 3 applications get global menu, I think it's especially important for Cinnamon to implement it too.
I mean, some applications (Control Center, Calculator, Disks, Notes...) look kinda ugly in Cinnamon with this one single button instead of a complete menu on top.
Is it at least planned?
