Yes, that's what happens when you try to compile AVX code without AVX enabled. Granted, we could use a better error message.

How to enable AVX then? I used -mavx and -march=corei7-avx but still has this problem. thank you

How are you trying to compile the testcase? -mavx should work with trunk clang.

I'm trying to use clang to compile ATLAS, using
"clang -fomit-frame-pointer -mavx -O2 -c foo.c"
"clang -fomit-frame-pointer -mavx -c foo.c"
giving similar error.

Using TOT clang, the source file is rejected by the fronted. llc compiles the attached bc file with -mattr=+avx without error, however I notice the instruction isn't there. If I add some arguments which aren't undef to the intrinsic, it is there.

If I use -mattr=-avx, I get:
