You initially reviewed this patch, do you think it is safe for the release_50 branch?

Yeah, if r312651 is merged, this is a safe. It would prevent the use of the settings which were removed in that commit. This doesn’t impact CG/ABI once the dependent commit is merged. This is to catch bad input from the user.
