TokenBar v1.2.6

A follow-up to v1.2.0 (Liquid Glass). It adds in-app updates, a custom background, swipe navigation on phones and a cost-first usage history, makes the app smoother and lighter, and fixes very high memory use and laggy window resizing on Windows. This release replaces v1.2.1, v1.2.2, v1.2.4 and v1.2.5 (their notes are included below); v1.2.2 was withdrawn because of the memory problem.

Fixed in v1.2.6 (Android)

  • Card blur no longer disappears while pulling down to refresh or scrolling past the end of a list: Android 12+ wrapped the list in an effect layer that left the blurred cards without a backdrop. The stretch effect is gone (the refresh spinner is unchanged).
  • Card blur stays on while opening a page such as an account's details, instead of switching off for the animation and popping back afterwards. (Desktop still drops the blur during page changes and window resizing for smoothness.)

New in v1.2.5: update inside the app

Until v1.2.5 a new version had to be downloaded from GitHub by hand. When an update is found (at launch or via Settings > About > Check for updates), the dialog now has an Update now button. Nothing is downloaded until you press it.

Platform What "Update now" does
Windows (installed with the setup) Runs the new installer silently, closes TokenBar and starts the new version. A portable copy only opens the release page.
Android Hands the APK to the system installer (the first time, Android asks you to allow TokenBar to install apps).
macOS / Linux Saves the dmg / archive to your Downloads folder, verifies it and opens it; you finish the install.
iOS / Web Opens the release page, as before.
  • Downloads come only from this repository's GitHub releases and are checked against the release's SHA256SUMS.txt before use; a mismatch deletes the file. The checksum proves the file is intact, not who built it (the Windows installer and macOS app are not code-signed). Android only accepts an APK signed with the same key.
  • The dialog shows download progress and can be cancelled; failures (network, checksum, permission) are reported in plain words. Open release page is always available.
  • Updating from v1.2.4 or older still has to be done by hand once (those versions cannot download updates). From v1.2.5 on, updates can be installed in the app.

Fixed in v1.2.4

  • Memory use on Windows: the app could take 2-4 GB shortly after launch and keep growing (and over 10 GB while dragging a window edge). The animated background created a new gradient shader on every step, which leaked native memory with the GPU backend used on Windows. The background is now drawn from pre-rendered images, and the glass rims no longer use gradient shaders either. Idle use is about 0.5 GB.
  • Laggy window resizing: dragging a window edge was very slow because every card re-blurred and re-shadowed its backdrop on each frame. The glass now switches to a light, blur-free look while the window is being resized and returns a moment after you let go.
  • Hidden in the tray: the window's interface is now released while it is hidden (or while the small tray panel is shown) and rebuilt when you open it again, and on Windows the unused memory is paged out, so the tray process shows only a few MB in Task Manager. Quota refreshes, notifications and the tray icon keep working. After hiding, the window reopens on the Quota page.
  • Cards and the sidebar no longer blur their backdrop over the gradient backgrounds (the blur showed nothing there); with a custom picture background the frosted-glass blur is still used.

What's new since v1.2.0

  • Custom background: Settings > Appearance > Background. Choose a gradient preset (Aurora, Sunset, Ocean, Forest, Graphite) or your own picture, with an adjustable overlay so text stays readable. The picture is copied into the app's own folder. Picture backgrounds are not available in the web build.
  • Swipe between pages (Android / iOS): swipe left / right to move between Quota, Accounts and Settings. Tapping the bottom bar still works.
  • Usage history defaults to cost: the per-model chart now opens on Cost instead of Tokens (it falls back to Tokens while there is no cost data).
  • Frosted glass over pictures: with a picture background, cards and the sidebar blur what is behind them. The default gradient is back to the calm blue / violet / teal look.
  • Smoother page transitions: opening an account's details no longer stutters on Windows and Android. Pages slide in without fading (so the glass no longer looks flat during the animation), history is loaded only after the animation ends, and Codex session logs are parsed off the UI thread.
  • Much lower idle CPU on desktop: a window hidden in the tray now uses almost no CPU (it used to burn most of a core), and the background animation only runs while the window is focused.
  • Tray panel: rounded corners on Windows 11. Clicking the tray icon now cycles hidden -> small panel -> full window -> hidden, and a quick double click goes straight to the full window.
  • Refreshed README screenshots (English and Chinese), now with light and dark variants.

Notes

  • If you installed v1.2.0, v1.2.1, v1.2.2, v1.2.4 or v1.2.5, this is the version to update to.
  • The in-app update on Windows was exercised by the CI installer test (silent install over a running copy and relaunch); the Android, macOS and Linux paths have not been tested on real devices yet.
  • The Android blur fixes were checked by automated tests only, not on a real device; page changes on phones now keep the blur, which was not measured on low-end devices.
  • The memory and resize fixes were measured on Windows only. The file picker is new in this line: picking a picture on macOS / iOS / Linux has not been tested on real devices. The tray panel corners and click cycle were verified on Windows only (macOS / Linux panels stay square).

    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/TokenBar.app.
  • iOS has no Apple signature. It cannot be installed as is: re-sign and
sideload it with your own Apple ID (AltStore, Sideloadly, ...).
  • Linux (x64 and ARM64), iOS and Windows on ARM builds are built by CI but
have not been tested on real devices yet.
