Platforms and Install

How an add-on gets onto each device, from minewright-project (Step 5), minewright-server (Step 5) and the example's INSTALL.md. The skill gives you the steps for your platform only. Everything here was researched on 2026-10-27 against Minecraft Bedrock 1.26.60. None of it was re-run in the game client for this wiki.

Windows (the GDK build)

The current Windows build of Minecraft Bedrock (from the Microsoft Store or minecraft.net) moved its game folder:

Folder
Current (GDK) %appdata%\Minecraft Bedrock\users\shared\games\com.mojang
Preview %appdata%\Minecraft Bedrock Preview\users\shared\games\com.mojang
Legacy (UWP, no longer used) ...\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang

Tutorials older than the GDK move still point at the legacy folder, and the README lists install steps for the old folder among the mistakes agents make without the skill.

Import with the game closed

Double-clicking an .mcaddon imports it, but only when Minecraft is fully closed. With the game running, the import silently does nothing (Mojang bug MCPE-227874, fix slated for Preview 1.26.70.20, not yet in a release on 2026-10-27). Close Minecraft, then double-click: the game starts and shows one "Successfully imported" message per pack.

If the import still does nothing, install by hand:

  1. Open the GDK com.mojang folder above in File Explorer.
  2. Rename a copy of the .mcaddon to .zip and extract it.
  3. Copy the behavior pack folder into behavior_packs and the resource pack folder into resource_packs.

While developing, copy the packs into development_behavior_packs and development_resource_packs instead; those reload each time the game starts.

Turn it on for a world

Create or edit a world, open Behavior Packs, and activate the pack. The resource pack comes along through the dependency; check under Resource Packs > Active that it is there. Leave every switch under Experiments off: an add-on built with these skills uses stable modules only. Minecraft warns that achievements are off for a world with add-ons, which is normal for any add-on not from the Marketplace.

iPhone and iPad

Open the file from Files or a share sheet, choose Minecraft, and wait for the import notification.

Android

Open the downloaded file from the Files app and choose Minecraft. Android 12 and later hide Android/data/com.mojang.minecraftpe from most file managers, so import rather than copy. That claim comes from the community wiki; the skill's research lists it as an open question until a Microsoft source confirms it.

Xbox, PlayStation and Switch: through a Realm only

Consoles cannot import files. The route the skill gives:

  1. Build the world with the add-on active on Windows or a phone.
  2. Upload that world to a Realm.
  3. Open the Realm on the console.

Experimental features do not work on Realms gameplay servers, which is one more reason to stay on stable modules. Consoles are widely reported to reach only Realms and featured servers, not a typed server address (not confirmed on a Microsoft page). Whether a base Realm, rather than Realms Plus, accepts an uploaded world with add-ons is an open question in the research.

LAN play

On the host: world settings, Multiplayer, turn on Multiplayer Game and Visible to LAN Players, then load the world. Others join from Play > Friends > LAN Games and download the packs on joining, with nothing to install. Give operator rights (Game Directors) to whoever runs the add-on's commands. These steps are community-documented; Mojang's help site could not be fetched to confirm them.

Playing on a local Bedrock Dedicated Server from Windows

For tests, use bds_run.py (Live server tests). For a play server, run BDS from its own folder and edit server.properties: online-mode=true when anyone outside the house can reach it, and allow-list with the players' gamertags.

Windows blocks the Minecraft app from reaching a server on the same machine. Microsoft's BDS getting-started page gives the loopback exemption as CheckNetIsolation.exe LoopbackExempt -a -p=<SID>, with separate SIDs for the retail and Preview apps. Copy the SID from that page (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/minecraft/creator/documents/bedrockserver/getting-started) and run it in an admin prompt. The skill asks before doing this. Other devices on the LAN do not need it.

Updating an add-on

Bump header.version in both manifests, then import the new .mcaddon the same way (game closed). If Minecraft keeps the old version, remove both packs from the com.mojang folders and import again.
