How does PinePods handle episodes removed by host?

I'm sorry if this is answered elsewhere but I could not find it explicitly mentioned in the docs. If an episode is removed by a host does PinePods also remove the episode and delete the file or does it maintain the local copy of metadata and file? I was burned by this with my last podcast backup solution.

Nope, Pinepods keeps the reference to that episode. If you don't have it downloaded it will fail to play though.
