Catalog sorting not working for boolean attributes

ISSUE:
Sorting with a newly defined product attribute is_featured does not display expected results.

STEPS TO REPLICATE:

1. create attribute yes/no "is_featured" in store>attribute>product to enable sorting and listing options

2. assign it to the attribute set Top

3. Enable attribute on products for SKU MH07 > run indexer:reindex and flush cache

4. Navigate to the front page Men-> Tops category

5. Sort by Featured

ACTUAL RESULTS:
The top tagged as featured did not appear first

EXPECTED RESULTS:
SKU MH07 is expected to appear first
