Error: Composer could not find a composer.json file in /setup

Unsable to install Magento2 via command line.

cd /path/to/magento2/setup
composer install

gives the following error:

Composer could not find a composer.json file in /setup
To initialize a project, please create a composer.json file as described in the http://getcomposer.org/ >"Getting Started" section

No need to run a second composer install in /setup anymore.
They were consolidated into a single run (Read the changelog).

Now when i try to run php -f index.php install --... gives me the following error:

Fatal error: Class 'Magento\Setup\Mvc\Bootstrap\InitParamListener' not found in >/setup/config/application.config.php on line 24

That looks strange, the setup worked quite fine for me just now.
Does your magento2/setup/module/Magento/Setup/src/Mvc/Bootstrap/InitParamListener.php file still exist?
I think the line should be php -f index.php -- install ... instead.

Otherwise, if the previous installation try messed up any files, you can try
git checkout -f master && git clean -fd to reset and force-clean the git folder from any crud (make sure you didn't copy any important unversioned files into it before running this), then try again.

I have seen this error before. I believe you have an outdated version of composer. For some reason composer is not generating the autoload psr 4 class correctly. Please run composer self-update and try again.

There is no need to run composer in /setup folder, please refer the doc -http://devdocs.magento.com/guides/v1.0/install-gde/install/install-web.html
