Export mplot3d plot to 3D file format

I'm opening a wish, in a hope that may be possible to export MPL 3D plot to 3D file format, for further processing

Would this be best done by implementing a VTK (or similar) backend?

@WeatherGod I think it would make sense to close this as "won't fix", because it is basically asking for mplot3d to be mayavi with enhancements, and that is not going to happen any time soon.

I kept it around as a wishlist item, but after further consideration, I
realize that it would require implementing a backend for such a file
format, and given how much the internals of mplot3d artist objects have
been in flux, maintaining that backend would be a nightmare.

@WeatherGod, OK, I will do the dirty deed and close this, then. There is a real cost to having as many open issues as we have now; it is too easy to forget about the ones we really need to address, and can address. That's why I encourage triage.
