git clone really necessary?

I am using this tool for backup, works fine. I am wondering why I have to run it from inside a full git repo. I want to store this backup in a safe place, which is different from my development machine where my git clones are. Is there a way to give a github URL and run this from an empty directory? Why is the git clone actually needed?

That's just the setup that matched my use case, but it could be done without having the repo cloned locally indeed. I gave it a try in v1.2.0; you should now be able to pass the repo URL in the CLI:

backup-github-repo https://github.com/some/repo
