@github-actions github-actions released this 31 Oct 02:39

Method Reader 1.1.0

Newer Kindles take your scripts over USB, and scripts that tripped Method Reader up now come through as the writer laid them out.

More from every script

  • Copy to a newer Kindle over USB (beta). Kindles from late 2024 on connect the way a phone does, so until now they could only take books by email. On a Mac, plug one in and choose Copy to Kindle. Photos and Image Capture pause while it copies.
  • Bring an .osf as well. A script in the Open Screenplay Format becomes a book, just as a PDF or a .fountain does.
  • Method Reader's own Kindle file is no longer beta. A newer Kindle opened it with every scene in its contents.

Fixed

  • Names left alone at the foot of a page in a KFX book. The printed page number pulled a name away from its lines. It now sits on the nearest description, usually a few lines on, and Go to page still works.
  • A reader's name stamped across every page. A diagonal watermark broke speeches in half and cut names off from their lines. It is now left out.
  • Unusual layouts. Parentheticals that wrap or sit further right, a name straight after side-by-side dialogue, and scripts typed with a word processor's margins all read correctly now.

Good to know

  • Copying to a newer Kindle over USB is on the Mac for now. On Windows and Linux those Kindles still take books by email.
  • A script converted before this release keeps its old reading. Convert it again to pick up the fixes.
  • In the Kindle file Method Reader makes itself (AZW3), a name can still land at the foot of a page, and Method Reader says so beside the copy. KFX, or sending by email, keeps names with their lines.

Mac: download Method-Reader-macOS.dmg (notarized, for Macs with Apple silicon or Intel, macOS 13 or later), open it, drag Method Reader to Applications, and double-click.

The SHA-256 of every download is in SHA256SUMS: in a folder holding the downloads, sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS --ignore-missing (or shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS --ignore-missing on a Mac) checks them.

Method Reader 1.0.0

Method Reader runs on Intel Macs again, and takes a .fountain as well as a PDF. It also brings a script to try it on, clearer words in the window, and the fixes 0.13.1 was going to carry.

More from every script

  • Intel Macs are back. One download runs on Apple silicon and Intel, macOS 13 or later. An Intel Mac that stopped at 0.9.0 now offers to update.
  • Bring a .fountain, not only a PDF. Drop one in or choose it, and it becomes a book.
  • More in the editable script. Each scene heading in the .fdx now carries its page and its length in eighths. And there is a third kind beside Fountain and .fdx: .osf (beta), an open format for screenwriting apps that read it.
  • See what is on your reader (beta). With a Kindle, Kobo or tolino plugged in, list its books and remove one. It asks first.

Fixed

  • Several scripts to a Kindle in a row. After one copy, the next script showed only Eject Kindle. Now each script has its own Copy button.
  • Side-by-side dialogue that runs long. A long exchange in two columns came through as one jumbled paragraph. Both speeches now come through whole.

Good to know

  • If your copy is still called Screepub Desktop or Screepub, it renames itself Method Reader the first time 1.0.0 opens. A Dock icon or login item set up under the old name may need adding again.
  • On Linux, Method Reader's own settings move once, from ~/.config to ~/.local/share.
  • Method Reader is no longer on Homebrew. Install it from the downloads; it keeps itself up to date.
  • Help, Report a Bug now writes an email you read and send yourself, so telling us something went wrong needs no GitHub account. Nothing from your script goes in it unless you add it.

Method Reader 0.13.0

Method Reader now checks for updates on its own, and you can turn that off in the Help menu. Screepub is now Method Reader, part of the Method Production Suite, and your books come out exactly as before.

A new name, the same books

  • Your settings and library move over. The first time it opens,
Method Reader moves your settings into its own folder, and a library in
the usual place moves to Documents, under Method Reader. A folder you
chose yourself stays where it is. Nothing is converted again.
  • A calmer window. It now looks like the other Method apps: your
system's own font, plain buttons, and a normal title bar. The script
    itself keeps its typewriter font.
  • Everything else is in the Help menu. About, keyboard shortcuts,
What's New, the licences, and Report a Bug.

Updates take care of themselves

  • Updates arrive on their own. On a Mac, two minutes after it opens
and every six hours after that, Method Reader asks GitHub whether there is a new
version, downloads it, and says Update ready. If you said no to
updates before, it stays off. Change it with Check for Updates
    Automatically
    in the Help menu.

Good to know

  • On a Mac, the app keeps the name Screepub in your Applications folder
until the next update renames it. It opens as Method Reader either way.
  • Your Mac asks once more before Method Reader can see a reader you plug
in, or open Mail or Books for you.
  • The command-line converter is now method-reader. The old name, screepub, still
works for a while and says it has been renamed.

Mac: download Method-Reader-macOS.dmg (notarized, for Macs with Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later), open it, drag Method Reader to Applications, and double-click. Its SHA-256 is in SHA256SUMS-app.

Screepub 0.12.1

The command-line converter for Linux and Windows is back on the downloads page.

For the command line

  • Linux and Windows downloads are back. Screepub 0.12.0 shipped
without its command-line converter for Linux and Windows, so those
download links led nowhere. They work again. The apps were never
    affected.

Good to know

  • If you already have 0.12.0, nothing in the app changes.

Screepub 0.12.0

Screepub is rebuilt from the ground up as one native program, and your scripts come out exactly as they did before.

A new Screepub, the same books

  • Every book is the same as before. The new Screepub was checked
against the old one on every test script and on real scripts, and the
books match. Your settings, your library and your reader carry over.
  • Read it or edit it. After a script converts, choose Read it to
send it to your reader, or Edit it to save it for Final Draft
(beta) or for Highland, Fade In and other Fountain apps, without
    hunting through Other ways.
  • A new Linux download. An AppImage now sits beside the Debian and
    Fedora packages.

Good to know

  • The first time it opens, Screepub may ask once more whether to check
    for updates.
  • The Windows and Linux downloads are checked automatically on every
build but haven't been installed by a person yet. Tell us how it goes.

Mac: download Screepub-macOS.dmg (notarized, for Macs with Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later), open it, drag Screepub to Applications, and double-click. Its SHA-256 is in SHA256SUMS-app.

Screepub 0.11.1

Your Kindle file is ready almost instantly, with nothing else to install.

Kindles over USB, faster

  • Screepub makes the Kindle file itself. Copying to a Kindle over USB
used to need Calibre, and waited on it to start every time. Now Screepub
writes the file in a fraction of a second, with nothing installed. It is
    marked Beta.
  • Calibre is only for the best-layout file. With Calibre, its KFX
plugin and Kindle Previewer installed, modern Kindles still get KFX.
Emailing to Kindle needs no tools at all.

Good to know

  • The new Kindle file reads back whole in two independent e-book readers,
but hasn't been opened on a real Kindle yet. Tell us how it goes.
  • Kindles from before 2012 can't read it. Use Save a file, then MOBI.
  • Kindle files Calibre made for your books are rebuilt once, the next time
    you send each one.

Screepub 0.10.0

Screepub now needs a Mac with Apple silicon: on an Intel Mac, 0.9.0 is the last version, and it keeps working. The pictures in your script now come through into the book.

Your script's pictures, in the book

  • Storyboards and photos stay where they sat. Panels, reference
photos and lookbook pages used to be dropped, leaving only the text
around them. Now they appear in place. Turn off Pictures from the
    script
in Settings for a smaller file.
  • A designed title page becomes the cover. A full-page title card at
the front now shows as the book's cover in your library, instead of a
plain one. Turn off Title card as the cover to keep it as the first
    page.
  • Saved Fountain files are clean. A Fountain file you saved for a
screenwriting app used to carry Screepub's own hidden notes. Now it
    leaves them behind.

Good to know

  • Pictures, the cover, FDX files, Eject on Windows and Linux, and the
device report buttons are marked Beta: they work in our tests, but
haven't been tried widely yet. Tell us how it goes.
  • Most e-ink screens are greyscale, so a color picture reads as black and
white. The Kindle file Screepub makes without Calibre leaves pictures out
    for now.
  • On an Intel Mac with the older Mac app, choose Not Now when this update
is offered: it will not open there. Download Screepub 0.9.0 from its
    release page instead.

Telling us about a device now reaches the internet, and only when you press the button. Sending starts right where your book appears, and a script PDF can become a script you edit again.

Convert, then send, on one page

  • Your book and your reader, side by side. The Send tab is gone.
When a script converts, its first page appears beside your reader,
asked once and remembered. A plugged-in Kindle gets one button that
    copies the right file.
  • Eject your reader after a copy. After copying over USB, the
button becomes Eject Kindle, so you can unplug safely without a
    trip to the Finder.
  • Get the script back to edit. Under Other ways, Save a file
now offers FDX for Final Draft and most screenwriting apps, beside
Fountain. It is rebuilt from the PDF's pages, so revision colors and
    exact page breaks stay behind.
  • The first page types itself out while you wait. It is on by
default. Turn off Animate the page in Settings if you'd rather not
watch. Typewriter sounds adds key clicks, and starts off.

Good to know

  • My device isn't here and the It worked and It did not work
answers send what you typed or chose, the app version and your system
to a service that keeps only counts and the day.
  • Eject on Windows and Linux, and FDX files in screenwriting apps,
haven't been tried on a real reader or app yet.

Screepub 0.8.0

There is one Screepub for Mac now, and it updates itself.

One app on your Mac

  • The older Mac app becomes the new one. If you use it with its
update check on, it installs the new app in its own place and opens
    it. Your books are untouched.
  • One download for every Mac. Screepub-macOS.dmg works on Apple
Silicon and Intel Macs running macOS 13 or later.

If you used Screepub Desktop

  • It updates into the same app. A few things happen once: it asks
again whether to check for updates, macOS asks again to reach your
reader the first time you copy to it, and Finder and the Dock still say
Screepub Desktop until you rename it. If you had both apps, delete
    Screepub Desktop.

Good to know

  • Settings you tuned for a script in the older Mac app start from the
defaults once. Your books are untouched.
  • The new app has no Cancel during a conversion. Most scripts finish in
    seconds.
  • Homebrew no longer installs the Mac app; download it instead. The
command-line converter stays: brew install --formula ssandweiss/tap/screepub.

Mac: download Screepub-macOS.dmg (notarized, universal, macOS 13 or later), open it, drag Screepub to Applications, and double-click. Its SHA-256 is in SHA256SUMS-app.

Screepub 0.7.5

Report a bug no longer puts your folder or file names in the public page it opens. This release makes copying, updating and Kindle files harder to break.

Your books are safer

  • A book survives being unplugged right after a copy. Unplugging
the moment a copy finished could leave a cut-off book under the
book's own name. Now the new copy is fully written before it replaces
    the old one.
  • Kindle files can't hang forever. Building one with Calibre or
Kindle Previewer could sit there indefinitely. Now it gives up after
    ten minutes and says so.
  • Updates finish cleanly. After installing, the window kept working
against the new version until it restarted, which could fail in odd
ways. Now it waits for running work, then restarts, offering Restart
    now
after two minutes. A harmless cleanup hiccup no longer calls a
    good update failed.

Fixed in the window

  • Convert it again converts again. It used to take you to the
Convert page showing the same result, with no way to convert.
  • Long titles and file paths stay inside their boxes. They used to
    run off the edge.
  • The scene list on Read is one Tab stop. Tab used to visit every
scene before the script. Now the up and down arrows move between
    scenes.

Good to know

  • Screepub needs macOS 13 or later, as it always has. On an older Mac it
used to open and then fail every conversion. Now the Mac says so before
    it opens.

Notarized universal build for macOS 14+ (Apple Silicon and Intel).
